Cisco Integrates Cognio's Wireless Management Tools

The integration of alerts from Cognio's Spectrum Expert allows physical layer sources of interference to be monitored in Cisco's Unified Wireless Network 4.1 release. This information includes the type of interferer (microwave oven, Bluetooth device or otherwise) and perceived strength of the signal. Although this is a step forward in allowing administrators to track non-Wi-Fi sources of interference in a centralized interface, it does not extend to pinpointing the source on a map like their rogue detection capabilities do. Hopefully further collaboration between Cisco and Cognio can flesh out location capabilities, allowing potentially show-stopping sources of interference to be tracked down more quickly.

Cisco Systems said this week it has integrated spectrum analysis technology from vendor Cognio into its expanding wireless LAN management platform.

Cognio's Spectrum Expert 3.1 will be integrated into Cisco's Wireless Control System, and will be called Cisco Unified Wireless Network Software 4.1, the vendors said.

Using the combined products, wireless engineers can gain visibility and management into spectrum interference problems across an entire WLAN. In this scenario, Cisco's product acts as a central monitoring device, pulling in information from Cognio's Spectrum Expert to give IT managers a comprehensive view of RF interference from a single console.
