That's certainly not to say that every IT professional will have a smooth career path. Job requirements and skills will change. Outsourcers will seize some positions. Technical and productivity advances will marginalize and eliminate others. "Creative destruction" is what Austrian economist Joseph Schumpeter called the inevitable upheaval as companies, industries--and professions--evolve.
But as an IT professional, understand that your skills will only grow in value. And as a manager, be good to your employees now in anticipation of the day when you'll have no other choice.
