Rumors were flying last week about the possibility of HP acquiring Mercury Interactive and yesterday those rumors proved to be true when HP laid out $4.5b in cash for the troubled company....

This is also the first, albeit indirect, acquisition of a SOA registry/repository (Systinet), and HP's move is being seen as an attempt by HP to compete more directly with IBM, whose support of SOA in its product lines has thus far been keeping up with rapidly evolving SOA and Web 2.0 technology.
