I've long argued that network chip developers should be given some
latitude to add new features outside the definition of existing
standards as long as they maintain full compatibility with existing
standards and are willing to make these enhancements publicly available
as part of future enhancements to the standards. This approach
encourages innovation and competition between chip vendors while
delivering appreciable benefits for organizations that are willing to
standardize on a single product. As such, Broadcom should be applauded
for its efforts to boost the performance of the company's wireless chip
offerings, regardless of the technology it chooses to utilize. But to
claim that it will be the first to market with products based on a
standard that doesn't yet exist, that's crossing the line.
