This month, Intracom is expected to introduce a multifunction server for the small office/home office (SOHO) and home computing markets. The Intellinet Active Networking SOHO Server combines a router with a four-port auto-sensing Ethernet switch, a built-in firewall, and a Web interface. The device lets up to four users share files and accepts a user-specified hard drive, enabling up to 200 GB of network attached storage.

The SOHO Server can support a virtual private network that provides authorized user access from remote locations. A wide-area network port with Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet allows high-speed Internet connections, and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol assigns dynamic Internet Protocol (IP) addresses to network devices to simplify administration. A Network Address Translation firewall protects computers from outside intrusion and denial-of-service attacks.

The Intellinet Active Networking SOHO Server will be available this month at a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $299.
