The technology advantage players like NetXen have over merchant chip vendors like Broadcom and Intel is fleeting. If Broadcom, which already has protocol offloads for all but FCoE, and Intel can integrate the features most people want before the server vendors feel the need to upgrade their LOM designs to include 10Gig, IOV and protocol offloads, the early players in the intelligent/virtualizable NIC market may end up trying to survive as niche players like Alacratech, selling better TOE to speed freaks while Broadcom sells in volume to Dell and HP.
