Information Governance In The Clouds: Page 2 of 2

In the rush to adopt public and hybrid cloud computing services organizations appear to be ignoring the emerging risks to information governance - policy compliance and enforcement - according to a new report from EMC's Leadership Council for Information Advantage, a blue-chip panel of IT execs. Using IDC data, EMC says 75 percent of IT organizations are running or plan to deploy applications in a private cloud environment, but only 34 percent have a governance policy for cloud-based information

The second recommendation is don't wait for standards to emerge, but lay the groundwork for future data integration activities today. The third is limit cloud platform proliferation by looking for shared requirements in the different business functions such as finance and human resources. Fourth is make information 'cloud-ready' by encrypting it and reorganizing data sets so they can be accessed and used across multiple platforms. And finally, organizations need to shift the IT department's focus from owning and operating IT systems to becoming master information service integrators.

From EMC's perspective as a provider of multiple offerings that should be as valuable in hybrid clouds as they are today in private clouds, the council's findings will help it "really build a cross-section of our offerings and where we want to be," says Lewis. "The whole focus has been on the private cloud, inside the firewall... (but) we believe in hybrid clouds... virtually 100 percent of large enterprises will be hybrid cloud over time."
