Along the way, Baldwin has also picked up some impressive optical credentials. He claims to have developed some of the first erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) while working at Polaroid Corp. (NYSE: PRD) in the 1980s. That's a big deal, because the invention of EDFAs paved the way for today's optical networking revolution.
