The European directive, issued last year, mandates the retention of communications data to support the investigation and prosecution of serious crimes across all EU member countries. The directive requires the retention of a wide variety of communications data including fixed and mobile telephony, email and voicemail, Internet usage, IP telephony and text messaging.
