Analysis: Out-of-Band Management: Page 10 of 10

The MergePoint's Web user interface can be configured to work with integrated system-management processors in two ways. First, a managed mode uses the MergePoint's custom interface to integrate the features and capabilities of the server's API. This provides a single point of security and management for the most common system processors: iLO, RSA, ILOM, IPMI, ALOM and DRAC. The MergePoint system also supports user customization to allow enhanced feature support for other APIs as they become available. The second method of integration is its DirectCommand mode, which provides secure pass-through connectivity to a system's native UI and allows transparent access to features such as desktop redirection.

The Avocent MergePoint is one of the only options that addresses integrated service-processor management in a heterogeneous environment. This may not be a big deal for companies that run a single-vendor shop, but for those less fortunate, the MergePoint may be one way of decreasing port counts and providing a single point of management across multivendor environments.
