Web Development and Site Management Resources
Page
Compiled by Rebecca
``Becca'' Thomas
This is a representative -- not exhaustive --
list of links to Web resources for the developer of server-side
facilities and management of those facilities. Generally, I've
tried to provide links to top-level sites that in turn provide
links to other resources and services. Occasionally, I've also
linked to sites that provide a particular resource or service
even though their primary focus is not to link to other
sites.
More general or generic references are listed toward the
beginning of each section, with new entries appended. Entries
for sites that are updated infrequently or appear inactive will
appear near the end of the section.
Are we missing an important link?
Please let us know.
Caveat: Your link selection has to pass our ``rigorous,
although subjective'' standards of link appraisal: it must be of
general utility and interest to the Web developer community :-)

Historical (static and dated, but still useful resources)
- Virginia Tech's Dept. of Computer Science's book World Wide
Web: Beyond the Basics is an online book about many aspects
of the Web. The book was produced by graduate students as part
of a graduate-level computer science course, ``World Wide Web:
Beyond the Basics,'', which was presented by Dr. Marc Abrams at
Virginia Tech in Fall 1996. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem
to have been updated since then.
The material in the book caters to a dual audience: novice users
of the WWW, who want a fundamental knowledge about existing and
evolving Web technology, and professional users, who want in-depth
infomation on specific topics. It seeks to address six major
issues surrounding the Web today:
- History and evolution of the Web
- Existing and evolving Web standards
- Effective representation of information
- Use of object technology for the Web
- Social and legal issues of the Web
- The future of the Web.

Web Hosting and Internet Service Providers
- Big Hosts/Web Hostings and ISPs
The first directory that is 100% all about dedicated servers and colocation. Find your dedicated hosting solution here. [added 3 July 2000]
- Lists of
Lists of ISPs links to other lists of providers. Many of the
links are for specific lists, say, limited to a geographic
region. [added 16 Aug 98]
- Internet.com's The List is a very
comprehensive guide to ISPs around the world. You can locate an
ISP by area code in North America or by country otherwise. Lists
of ISPs that serve all US states and all Canadian provinces are
provided, too.
[updated 16 Aug 09]
- Celestin's Providers of
Commercial Internet Access (POCIA) site has been a
comprehensive listing of ISPs all over the world since August
1994. The providers are divided into North America and other
countries. Nationwide and regional providers, as well as
toll-free 800/888 providers, are listed for North America. This
directory appears small because the entries aren't duplicated.
POCIA also lists Web hosting companies. Information appears on
large pages without search facilities. [added 16 Aug 98]
- Network-USA's Internet Service Providers
Catalog provides worldwide coverage. It's organized by
country, then by telephone area code for US and Canada or by
telephone city code for other countries, and finally by telephone
exchange number. Coverage is spotty.

and a Web Host
Guide that helps users -- from novices to professionals -- to
better understand the Web hosting industry. [added 15 Aug 98]
- The Host Index provides
a search facility to locate hosting services by a feature they
offer, or by state, province. Also lists the top 20 hostings
companies each month based on criteria that includes feedback
from our Web site users, Web site navigation, features and
pricing, and customer support.
[added 16 Aug 98]

A Few Specific search engines
- Extended SWISH
is a fast, powerful, flexible, and easy to use system for
indexing collections of Web pages or other text files. Key
features include the ability to limit searches to certain HTML
tags (META, TITLE, comments, etc.). The SWISH-E software is free,
and includes a package of Perl programs that enable anyone who
is authorized to create and maintain their own indexes
(AutoSwish). SWISH-E is an enhanced version of SWISH, which was
originally written by Kevin Hughes and modified and released with
his permission.
[added 15 Aug 98]
- Glimpse is a
powerful indexing and query system that allows one to search
through all their files very quickly. It can be used by
individuals for their personal file systems as well as by
organizations for large data collections. Glimpse is the default
search engine at Harvest.
Glimpse is now at version 4.1. [entry added 10 Nov 95; updated 15
Aug 98]
- WebGlimpse
adds search capabilities to your Web site automatically and
easily. It attaches a small search box to the bottom of every
HTML page, and allows the search to cover the neighborhood of
that page or the whole site. With WebGlimpse there is no need to
construct separate search pages, and no need to interrupt the
users from their browsings. All pages remain unchanged except
for the extra search capabilities. It is even possible for the
search to efficiently cover remote pages linked from your pages.
(WebGlimpse will collect such remote pages to your disk and index
them.) Installation, customization (for example, deciding which
pages to collect and which ones to index), and maintenance are
easy. WebGlimpse is now at version 1.5, and it is available for
download. [added 15 Aug 98]

Web Performance
Historical

Server Configuration Guide discusses the factors that
effect the speed of page delivery.
[entry added 27 Sep 96; checked 15 Aug 98]
- The GStone is a
measure of Web server performance for a "typical" user connecting
to a "typical" server which is under a "typical" load. It is a
measure of performance from the user's point of view. The GStone
measures the time it takes to start a connection and the rate at
which data is transmitted. In short: "when I click on a link,
how long until I start getting data and how fast do I get the
data?"
