The explosion in World Wide Web programming has created a strong demand for useful information on Common Gateway Interface (CGI) and the Perl scripting language. To point you in the right direction, here are brief lists of CGI books and Perl books you may find helpful in exploring and mastering these tools.

A few caveats before you dive into these lists. I haven't attempted to list every book on these subjects; just a broad and ample selection. Although I've compiled separate lists for CGI and for Perl, many of these books teach both. In those cases I've put the book in one list or the other primarily on whether CGI or Perl seems to predominate in its pages. To keep this list up to date, I've listed some books that are not yet on the bookstore shelves as I write this.

If you suffer from a dearth of nearby technical bookstores where you could buy some of these books, the World Wide Web can now come to your rescue. Online bookstores specializing in books on computing have proliferated, and the best of them are now sophisticated enough that they're almost as helpful and convenient as physical bookstores. My personal favorite on-the-Web menu of computer-specializing online bookstores is the Book Wire directory, which covers the world. If you want a list that includes only North America's online computer-book dealers, try the ABA directory.
