Storage Alchemy: Don't Count Tape Out Just Yet: Page 2 of 2

Of course, the vendors can piddle back and forth all day--the disadvantage of the married media and drive mechanisms can be mitigated (but not eliminated) by RAID schemes. Tapes need to be barcoded, and handled and stored. Yada yada.

Bottom line: Disk isn't a panacea. Disk sales may take a bite out of the tape market, but tape technology is still alive and kicking. And your backup strategy doesn't have to be all or nothing. Indeed, the smart money takes the best of both worlds--a tiered structure in which data flows from mainline storage to near-line storage, and then is moved to tape. Disk-to-disk allows for fast restores, and tape allows for secure off-site backup for data recovery.

Take the sensible approach. Use each technology where it is most effective and appropriate.
