Hard Rock Cafe Replaces Tape Backup With Disk: Page 2 of 2

Deduplication technology was a good option, because it eliminates redundant data and reduces the back-up time and required storage capacity, since only the unique data is stored.
With Avamar's sub-file data deduplication technology, Hard Rock has been able to reduce file and VMware server data by more than 97 percent, according to Kosier. Back-up windows have shrunk from 18-36 hours to only 4 hours, and Microsoft Exchange backups decreased from 12 hours to 4-12 minutes. Recovery times also have improved dramatically, now taking just minutes versus 3-7 days to recover from tape.

Hard Rock is completely tapeless now. The implementation took less than a week and Kosier says the system performed as expected, once it was up and running. "Before we decided on EMC, we saw the demos and had heard the hype. We were surprised that, after implementing the system and it was in production, we got the same results," Kosier recalls. Now, Hard Rock has decided to expand its use of Avamar, and has already purchased more space. "We have put more on it than we had originally forecasted, because it works so well."
