Mobile and iPhone application developer Apperian Monday reported it has hired industry veteran David Patrick as CEO to lead the firm as it seeks to grow its business-to-consumer and business-to-employee business.

Most recently, Patrick was CEO of enterprise database virtualization software company Xkoto, which was acquired by Teredata earlier this year. Patrick has also been vice president and general manager of Novell's $450 million SUSE Linux and Netware operation. His work resume also includes stints as president of worldwide sales and operations of The Learning Company.

"Apperian is a leader in providing enterprise-focused mobile application development and management solutions in an exploding market," said Patrick in a statement, noting that Apperian has launched mobile applications for both Apple and Google platforms.

Apperian's founder and former CEO, Chuck Goldman, will remain at the Boston-based firm as chief strategy officer, responsible for business development and continuing working to grow the firm's professional services team.

A former longtime Apple employee, Goldman was in charge of Apple's effort to market its products to IT executives in enterprises. At Apple, he was director of field engineering and professional services. He based much of his plans for Apperian on a conviction that the iPhone's gradual infiltration into IT enterprises presented an opportunity to spread iPhone technology throughout IT organizations.

Among the 55 applications that Apperian has developed, iPhone greeting card apps for American Greetings and tax apps for Intuit are among the most successful.
The company has been financed to date with relatively small infusions of venture capital; Patrick will seek additional financing.
