Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

4 VDI Planning Tips

September 12, 2013 05:59 PM
Make sure you understand the true costs and network requirements of virtual desktop infrastructure before making the leap to VDI, experts say.

Desktop Virtualization No Cost Saver?

October 04, 2012 01:52 PM
Don't ignore added costs VDI brings to the data center when calculating ROI on a virtualization project, warns consultant in Interop session.

Dell, Nimble, GreenBytes and NetApp Up the Ante to Support VDI

August 30, 2012 10:00 AM
A virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) can be difficult to launch and expensive. Is the storage infrastructure ready to support VDI? Learn how storage vendors Dell, Nimble, GreenBytes and NetApp are answering that question.

5 Misconceptions About Optimizing WAN Traffic For Virtual Desktop Infrastructure

March 02, 2012 11:24 AM
When it comes to a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), performance over the wire seems to be one of the most critical elements for success. Yet, many administrators approach that concern incorrectly, relying on what has worked in the past as a solution for today's VDI performance issues.

Atlantis VDI Ups IOPS Performance By 10 To 20 Times

January 20, 2012 09:00 AM
Atlantis Computing has announced Atlantis ILIO Diskless VDI, a virtual desktop infrastructure product that makes use of server-based blade storage that it claims eliminates storage for Citrix and VMware virtual desktop operating system images. This means that users can reduce the capital expenses associated with VDI to less than $200 per desktop while providing boot times of 12 seconds. The company has tested the product with Cisco UCS blade servers, which can deploy up to 6,400 virtual desktops in one rack, and is promoting it with Cisco, but the product is server-agnostic.

Ohio Department Of Developmental Disabilities Taking Control Of Virtual Desktops

May 02, 2011 11:56 AM
When it comes to IT, Ohio's Department of Developmental Disabilities (DoDD) wants innovation. So when the agency's IT manager went looking for a way to manage the new virtual desktop infrastructure, he looked for innovative solutions. "In our agency, we know we have to innovate. And one of the ways we work is we look for innovators in the industry," says Kipp Bertke, IT manager for the Ohio DoDD, which oversees a system of support services for 80,000 people with developmental disabilities.

The Importance Of Correcting Packet Loss In VDI

March 30, 2011 11:13 AM
Recently, on the LinkedIN WAN optimization professionals group, I participated in a conversation around whether virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) is ready for the WAN. Face it, delivering responsive VDI over the WAN is going to be a challenge. One of the interesting points that came up was the importance of correcting for packet loss when considering WAN optimizers.

Bring-Your-Own Laptop Won't Help VDI

January 11, 2011 10:52 AM
When I made my 2011 predictions, I didn't hold out much hope for virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). I don't think that the upsides in moving to VDI--fast ROI, reduction in operations expenses, security enhancements, etc.--are enough for IT shops to change what they are doing. And I mean any type of VDI, from the traditional remote desktop that Citrix and Microsoft have offered for years to the newer VDI products that run as virtual machines on a desktop or off removable media, some of which we reviewed in 2009. One of the drivers, as Forrester Analyst Andre Kindness notes on Twitter, is that bring-your-own computer is forcing companies to VDI. I disagree, not because you can't use VDI in that situation--if you are going to support bring-your-own laptop, then VDI would be preferred for company apps--but because the costs associated with supporting bring-your-own laptop and transitioning to VDI for most companies are too high compared with the organizational benefit that would be gained.

Enterprises Will Tread Cautiously Into VDI In 2011

January 05, 2011 08:00 AM
A new survey shows that many companies are looking into implementing client virtualization--technology that delivers applications to end point computers virtually, rather than from software on a desktop or server. However, the survey says, companies are finding that client virtualization is more complex to implement than they realized, that ROI is difficult to calculate, and that training end users can be a challenge. The survey of IT administrators by enterprise technology provider CDW concludes that companies have to conduct more upfront planning and analysis to have a successful deployment.

Virtualization Moving From Data Center To Desktop

October 22, 2010 01:43 PM
Virtualization has sparked a paradigm shift in the IT industry. Because this computing technique enables companies to more effectively maximize use of their hardware, many corporations who have virtualized their servers are starting to think about applying that same principle to their desktops.
