Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

A Network Computing Webinar:
SDN First Steps

Thursday, August 8, 2013
11:00 AM PT / 2:00 PM ET

This webinar will help attendees understand the overall concept of SDN and its benefits, describe the different conceptual approaches to SDN, and examine the various technologies, both proprietary and open source, that are emerging. It will also help users decide whether SDN makes sense in their environment, and outline the first steps IT can take for testing SDN technologies.

Pure Storage SSDs Address VDI, Database Challenges, But Is Focus Too Narrow?

May 16, 2012 09:35 AM
SSD vendor Pure Storage looks to solve the performance issues challenging VDI and database apps, but at least one analyst wonders if the company's focus is too narrow.

The Importance of Storage Virtualization

May 02, 2012 10:31 AM
With IT budgets relatively static and data on the rise, storage virtualization isn’t just an option, according to one expert: It’s a necessity.

HDD Shortages Spurring Storage Efficiencies

March 12, 2012 09:00 AM
While there is a worldwide hard-disk drive (HDD) shortage due to recent flooding in Thailand that is affecting pricing, industry observers say the impact won’t be felt over the long term and that organizations are looking at how to increase efficiencies anyway, due to user demand to store more data.

Nimbus Sets The Stage For Mainstream Enterprise SSD

February 13, 2012 09:00 AM
Solid-state array pioneer Nimbus Data's new E-Class array system is a sign that solid-state storage is moving from the high-performance fringe to the mainstream of the enterprise data center. Most first-generation, all-solid-state arrays, including Nimbus Data's own S-class, were best suited to targeted applications where high performance with single points of failure was acceptable. The new asset class, like most midrange disk arrays, has a dual-controller design to satisfy my enterprise reliability requirements.

Dell Moves Ahead Fluidly in Storage

January 20, 2012 12:32 PM
The IT industry is always adapting to new trends, from client-server and the PC revolution of the '80s and '90s to cloud computing and big data today. These trends inspire successful new vendor entrants, but they can also be problematic for established IT vendors. Over time, some leaders don't adapt and die (see Digital Equipment Corporation), while others swoon and survive in a reduced state by being acquired by larger saviors (see Sun Microsystems).

Lessons Learned From 3Par & Data Domain

September 07, 2010 08:00 AM
In the past two years, we have been privy to two exciting bidding wars that ended in two-billion dollar payouts for both 3Par and Data Domain. Despite the fact that they were in two different ends of the storage market, there is a lot to be learned from both of these companies. The key factor is that both companies focused on the task at hand. They essentially did one thing really well. In the case of 3Par, it was simplifying block storage in the enterprise, and in the case of Data Domain, it was simplifying backup storage. Each company's focus made users' jobs easier, and users voted with their dollars.

Will HP-3PAR End EVA?

August 24, 2010 10:01 AM
Why is 3PAR so important and why are they getting billion dollar offers? Fellow Network Computing contributor Howard Marks outlines the specifics in his most recent entry. In short, 3PAR has been an innovator in the space. My concern with Dell-3PAR or HP-3PAR is wondering whether innovation will continue? Also, s HP prepared to make the hard choice to end its EVA storage solution?

Understanding Competitive Barriers: Intellectual Property

July 13, 2010 01:00 PM
It is important to understand how suppliers can gain sustainable competitive advantages. IT professionals need to know this so they can better understand how to assess the companies they do business with, and suppliers need to understand this to know where they stand in the market. Any businesses' goal is to gain a competitive advantage that is defendable. To do this, they need to build barriers. For the technology company, those barriers are the intellectual property that makes up the product, the logistics that creates or delivers the product and the customers that use the product.

If It's Not Broke, Break It

June 03, 2010 12:02 PM
In my last entry (http://www.networkcomputing.com/backup-recovery/the-challenges-of-legacy-storage.php) I covered some of the challenges that legacy storage vendors have when adding previously unthought of capabilities to a storage system not designed to support them. At some point though does it make sense to start fresh and leave the legacy platform behind, basically breaking what isn't broken?

File Systems 2.0

May 17, 2010 10:00 AM
Storage management challenges are often being addressed by either storage hardware vendors or storage software developers. It is time for file systems to step up and offer a little help to the process. Most of the third-party software and hardware actually do a good job of solving many of the problems, but there are a few areas where the file system could help out like thin provisioning, backup and deduplication.
