Cisco TelePresence Turns 5, Broadens Options

Cisco Systems is marking the fifth birthday of its high-definition TelePresence videoconferencing system with a flurry of product announcements, including less expensive and more portable systems. The company is also offering TelePresence as a hosted service for SMBs. And, responding to critics of its closed, proprietary ecosystem, Cisco said its technology is more interoperable with most other HD videoconferencing systems entering the market Cisco helped create.

Spending On Videoconferencing And Telepresence To Double By 2015

Enterprises will spend $5 billion on videoconferencing and telepresence solutions in 2015, Infonetics predicted in a study released Monday. Last year, revenue for these technologies grew 18 percent, reaching $2.2 billion worldwide, the research firm said. As businesses around the globe continue to seek out new ways of cost-effectively and efficiently communicating, their spending on videoconferencing and telepresence is expected to increase, the study said.

Cisco Integrates Tandberg Telepresence

Demonstrating that its $3.4 billion acquisition of Tandberg earlier this year is progressing smoothly and on schedule, Cisco has announced updates to three lines of products in the telepresence, or high-definition video teleconferencing, marketplace. The Tandberg acquisition was announced last October 1 and closed on April 19. The intent of telepresence is to use high-quality, high-definition video and audio to provide an experience that is as good as being in person.

Polycom, Fighting Cisco, Adds To Telepresence Line

Video conference technology provider Polycom adds to its lineup of HD telepresence systems in a battle for dominance against Cisco Systems, especially in the wake of Cisco's acquisition of Tandberg. Polycom is introducing the OTX 300 Immersive Telepresence product. Telepresence provides a high-end video that aims to duplicate the experience of being in the same room for participants in separate locations. Telepresence systems require dedicated--and expensive--equipment and specially constructed studios.

Cisco and TANDBERG Provide Technology Roadmap Update Prior to Transaction Close

Cisco and TANDBERG today provided details about the integrated product portfolio that will be unveiled after the close of Cisco's voluntary public cash offer to acquire all outstanding shares in TANDBERG. Cisco and TANDBERG remain competitors until close. The companies anticipate regulatory approval in the first half of calendar year 2010.
