Last year, revenue for these technologies grew 18 percent, reaching $2.2 billion worldwide, the research firm said. As businesses around the globe continue to seek out new ways of cost-effectively and efficiently communicating, their spending on videoconferencing and telepresence is expected to increase, the study said.
June 18, 2010 12:30 PMDemonstrating that its $3.4 billion acquisition of Tandberg earlier this year is progressing smoothly and on schedule, Cisco has announced updates to three lines of products in the telepresence, or high-definition video teleconferencing, marketplace. The Tandberg acquisition was announced last October 1 and closed on April 19. The intent of telepresence is to use high-quality, high-definition video and audio to provide an experience that is as good as being in person.

Polycom is introducing the OTX 300 Immersive Telepresence product. Telepresence provides a high-end video that aims to duplicate the experience of being in the same room for participants in separate locations. Telepresence systems require dedicated--and expensive--equipment and specially constructed studios.

Cisco and TANDBERG remain competitors until close. The companies anticipate regulatory approval in the first half of calendar year 2010.
