May 09, 2012 01:29 PM
Sure, you could build a data center, one expert told the Interop crowd. But a co-lo facility may be more resource- and cost-efficient in the long run. Find out why.Infrastructure Upgrade Eases Data Center Challenges for Interactive Data
March 07, 2012 11:00 AM
Interactive Data, a financial information supplier, relies on its computer infrastructure to serve its clients. So when temperature and power fluctuations were sporadically impacting its data center, the company began searching for the root cause of the problem. After a few unsuccessful attempts, an upgrade to its network management solution served as a much needed elixir.Modular Data Centers Best Suited For SMBs
March 05, 2012 09:00 AM
The typical data center was designed for finicky mainframes, but in the age of robust virtualized servers--not to mention economic considerations--many organizations are opting to tweak the data centers they have, according to the InformationWeek Analytics State of the Data Center Survey. Many are considering new data center designs rather than dealing with the cost and difficulty of retrofitting an outdated facility, but while modular data centers are growing in popularity, and available from enterprise heavyweights like Cisco, HP, IBM and Oracle, they appear to be better suited for SMBs.My Next Data Center: Power Distribution
August 20, 2010 09:00 AM
Now that we've resolved that I'm using AC power coming out of a modular UPS in my next data center, we can look at how I'll get power from the UPS to my server and storage racks. Over the years I've seen all sorts of solutions, from L5-20 twist-lock outlets in the ceiling and orange extension cords under the raised floor, to APC's pre-built whips running in cable troughs on top of the racks. After all that, I definitely know what I like, and don't.My Next Datacenter: No DC Power For Me
August 13, 2010 09:30 AM
When the green data center movement started a few years ago, I started to see claims that switching our data centers to DC power would save us 20 or even 30 percent on our power costs. I'm not buying it. Not only do I think the 20-30 percent savings claims are, shall we say, somewhat exaggerated, but I don't think there's 20 percent power waste in the power conditioning and distribution systems in most data centers. As we continue the My Next Data Center, series I'll explain why there's "No DC For Me."My Next Data Center: Power Conditioning
August 11, 2010 03:00 PM
It's been a long time since anyone at Network Computing, or anyone among our erstwhile competitors, has talked seriously about KVM switches, power distribution, cable management or any of the other little things that keep a data center running smoothly. Since we just moved DeepStorage labs into a new data center, I figured I'd share what I learned in the process and describe what I'd do the next time I get to build a small-to-medium size data center from scratch. I'll start with power conditioning.Smart Grid Integration A Daunting Task As Green Energy Comes Online
March 04, 2010 11:37 AM
As alternative green energy sources come online, power plants and energy distribution substations find their networks challenged by smart grid demands that call for rapid changes between traditional and alternative energy sources. System and network integration on a smart grid that manages hybrid energy sources is on technology road maps for virtually every utility company now, but a majority are still not diversified with alternative energy. Consequently, the prospect of integrating traditional and alternative energy systems with networks looms large.1 | 2 | Next Page »
