Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

How To Tackle The Big Data Challenge (Part 1)

April 23, 2012 11:00 AM
Big data is a term getting bandied about a lot these days. It describes the phenomenon of information that keeps growing in organizations, thanks in part to the growth in social media. According to the InformationWeek Research: The Big Data Management Challenge survey of technology professionals, regardless of industry, the five top data drivers are financial transactions, email, imaging data, Web logs, and Internet text and documents. The two main benefits of big data management are being able to standardize procedures and services, and the ability to organize data so it can be searched, browsed, navigated, analyzed and visualized, according to survey respondents.

Quantum Extends LTFS/LTO Tape Market

April 18, 2012 09:00 AM
Quantum has chosen to announce its Scalar Linear Tape File System (LTFS) appliance at this week's National Association of Broadcasters convention in Las Vegas. The Scalar LTFS appliance uses a self-describing file system and is intended to act as a gateway between a tape library supporting the Linear Tape Open (LTO) standard and network-attached storage (NAS), providing the benefits of LTFS to library users as well as to users of standalone LTO drives.

Report From The Tape Summit

March 21, 2012 09:24 AM
This week I spent two busy days in San Francisco at the second annual Tape Summit. While some may wonder if there’s enough life left in tape to have a summit I know tape has taken a bad rap over the past few years. In this post I’ll reflect on a few key facts that came out at the summit and expose some fallacies about tape. To start Gartner never said “71% of all attempts to restore from tape fail”.

WOCs Address Soaring Bandwidth Demand

March 19, 2012 09:00 AM
The wide area network (WAN) optimization market is expected to grow almost 60% over the next five years, with sales predicted to reach $1.65 billion in 2016, from $1.05 billion in 2011. WAN optimization controllers (WOC), as they’re called, not only speed up network traffic and improve the performance of applications, they also help enterprises avoid costly upgrades to bandwidth capacity.

5 Misconceptions About Optimizing WAN Traffic For Virtual Desktop Infrastructure

March 02, 2012 11:24 AM
When it comes to a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), performance over the wire seems to be one of the most critical elements for success. Yet, many administrators approach that concern incorrectly, relying on what has worked in the past as a solution for today's VDI performance issues.

Akamai, Riverbed Shrink SaaS App Latency

March 01, 2012 09:00 AM
One of the dirty little secrets of software as a service (SaaS) is how long it takes to get the service. A request for access to a SaaS application travels from the client device, across the corporate WAN, across the public Internet to the SaaS provider's data center where the app is hosted--and back--so a lot of time is spent making the connection, not to mention the hundreds or thousands of round trips made in just one session in which the app is being used. Application delivery platform provider Akamai Technologies has partnered with WAN optimization provider Riverbed Technology to include their technologies in each other's products to improve the performance of SaaS applications.

Asigra Updates Cloud Backup, Extends NetApp Partnership

February 26, 2012 09:00 AM
Asigra's Cloud Backup software update, Version 11.2, offers deeper array snapshot integration, increased support for virtualization and mobile devices, increased performance, and service delivery enhancements. In addition, the company is extending its strategic partnership with NetApp to provide what it says is the first fully vetted joint offering from the NetApp Cloud Solutions Team, a data-processing-as-a-service solution that is intended to make it easier for telecommunications companies to launch backup services more quickly--in as little as six months, compared with up to 36 months. Both products are intended primarily for the high-end Tier 1 telecommunications market.
