Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

SDN First Steps

Thursday, August 8, 2013
11:00 AM PT / 2:00 PM ET

This webinar will help attendees understand the overall concept of SDN and its benefits, describe the different conceptual approaches to SDN, and examine the various technologies, both proprietary and open source, that are emerging. It will also help users decide whether SDN makes sense in their environment, and outline the first steps IT can take for testing SDN technologies.

Open Source Poised for Innovation Explosion

August 06, 2013 07:16 PM
Cost pressures and the fast feedback of open source's development model will spur new levels of innovation in open software in the next ten years.

How Tape and LTFS Can Relieve Storage Pressure

June 27, 2013 08:56 AM
Most data stored on hard disk has little value, but enterprises are reluctant to part with it. Tape is more cost-effective, and Linear Tape File System (LTFS) makes writing to a tape-based active archive much easier.

When Lawsuits Replace Innovation, Customers Lose

July 06, 2010 11:30 AM
There has been a growing surge of legal action in the storage and networking supplier community over the last few weeks, and no matter who the winner is, the IT professionals who use these technologies are going to be the real losers. I'm all for technology companies protecting their intellectual property, and when a patent is directly infringed on, they should do everything they can to protect themselves. At some point, though, you have to accept that in technology, people are going to try to add your successful features to their products.

File Systems 2.0

May 17, 2010 10:00 AM
Storage management challenges are often being addressed by either storage hardware vendors or storage software developers. It is time for file systems to step up and offer a little help to the process. Most of the third-party software and hardware actually do a good job of solving many of the problems, but there are a few areas where the file system could help out like thin provisioning, backup and deduplication.

The Types Of Automated Tiering

March 09, 2010 08:00 AM
Automated tiering, the transparent movement of data between tiers of storage, has several methods of delivery. There is some disagreement as to which is the "real" automated tiering. I'm not sure if from a storage manager's perspective it matters, but understanding the types of automated tiering will help you select the best method for your data center.

The Cloud As Primary Storage

January 19, 2010 12:03 PM
To this point and for the foreseeable future, cloud storage will largely be isolated to use as an archive or as a backup destination. At some point, however, cloud providers are going to start offering cloud storage as a primary storage location. What needs to happen to get there and how close are we? This differs from the discussion about primary storage that a software as a service cloud (Saas) provider will use. As I wrote about in this blog last year, these solutions will require the typical tier 1 storage capabilities. This blog is about secondary tier applications that don't have the very high performance demands of the primary applications within a data center.
