The opportunity to profit from the intersection of big data and data analytics is huge, but a new study from EMC reports a "rampant scarcity" for the prerequisite skills necessary for a company to capitalize on these opportunities. Only one-third of the companies participating in the EMC Data Science Study--covering the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, India and China--are able to effectively use new data to assist their business decision making, gain competitive advantage, drive productivity growth, yield innovation and reveal customer insights, says the storage giant.

Kroll Ontrack Offers E-discovery SaaS Option For Companies, Law Firms

Kroll Ontrack, a provider of software to conduct e-discovery projects for law firms and in-house legal counsel, is introducing a SaaS version of its product called the Verve do-it-yourself e-discovery platform. Kroll already offers a hosted platform that enables customers to send raw data to Kroll, which then organizes it and presents clients with the data relevant to a particular case. Now the SaaS option lets customers do that for themselves in the cloud.

Attunity has announced Attunity Replicate, data replication software that the company says provides the same performance as similar software products from other major vendors but is much simpler to use, doesn't require users to install software on their computers and costs about half as much. It is mainly intended for the replication of big transaction data from databases, including Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server and IBM DB2.

Quantivo Launches Cloud-Delivered Data Analytics Service

A data analytics firm whose corporate lineage is traced back to BigFix, an IBM acquisition, has emerged as Quantivo, which is offering data analytics as a cloud-based service. Quantivo, whose CEO, Dave Robbins, grew BigFix from a start-up to a $400 million business, is targeting customers that may not be the biggest companies around but still have "big data" issues to handle.

E-Discovery Needs To Move To The Cloud, Survey Finds

Respondents to a recent unscientific survey on e-discovery indicated that they were particularly interested in adding e-discovery support for cloud applications and social media in their organizations, but that they did not think their organizations were prepared to perform e-discovery in the cloud. In addition, they seemed more interested in monitoring potential legal challenges from social media than they did in controlling their employees’ use of social media in the first place.
