Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

Cloud Backup Services: Key Considerations

March 27, 2014 11:30 AM
The cloud approach has made backup easier in some ways, but also raises questions.

Dell Adds AppAssure to Its Storage Portfolio

March 05, 2012 09:00 AM
Dell recently announced the acquisition of AppAssure, which it describes as a next-generation data protection solution because it deals not only with physical IT assets, but also with virtual and cloud environments. Dell plans to integrate the AppAssure software product with its Fluid Data architecture. AppAssure is the first acquisition that Dell has made since the creation of its new Software Group and will be part of its enterprise storage and software portfolio. This acquisition is another significant signpost that Dell is aggressively attacking the storage and storage management market, and the software market overall, more broadly.

Tape Summit Predicts Tape Renaissance

April 25, 2011 07:00 AM
Summing up the recent Tape Summit in Nevada, the basic message was that tape is not only about to see a resurgence but rather a renaissance. This would seem to be counter-intuitive to many, but the claim has merit. Let's explore that and see why, since IT will be the major benefactor if the claim can be proven.

Amplidata Builds 'Unbreakable' Storage

April 15, 2011 09:00 AM
While I stand by my position that we put too much of the responsibility for keeping our data safe for the long term on storage systems, as I wrote in Long Term Retention:It's More Than Media, I also believe that you bet on different horses for different courses. Startup Amplidata's new AmpliStor system has most of the features on my wish list for storing large data objects like medical images or rich media.

ZL Technologies: A Unified Approach To Active Archiving

February 25, 2011 10:21 AM
Even though the "cloud" occupies much of the dialogue about transformative processes in IT, the place of archiving in that transformation is still poorly understood by many IT organizations and needs to attract more attention. Therefore, we should welcome any light that can be shed on the subject, and ZL Technologies' unified archiving approach is particularly luminous. Let's examine what the company is doing, but first, we should discuss the need for active archiving in general.

Symantec Report Chronicles Sloppy Data Retention Practices

August 03, 2010 09:35 PM
A study by Symantec shows that while most businesses believe in the value of a data retention plan, fewer than half follow one, resulting in increased expense and reduced efficiency as they basically follow a "save everything" policy in practice. The Symantec Information Management Health Check, the result of a global survey of 1,680 businesses in 26 countries, shows that while 87 percent of respondents believe in the value of a formal information retention plan, only 46 percent actually have one. The survey also shows that 75 percent of backup data storage plans consist only of "infinite retention" of materials or legal holds, which are orders not to destroy certain data that may be material in a lawsuit or regulatory investigation.

New Hitachi Archive Blends Private Cloud With Managed Operations

June 29, 2010 05:23 PM
Hitachi Data Systems Corp. is announcing Hitachi Cloud Services, a suite of storage services for enterprise customers. The first out of the gate is Hitachi Cloud Service for Private File Tiering, a storage-as-a-service (Saas) offering that tiers archived data onto equipment and software that is owned, run and maintained by Hitachi, but which resides on the enterprise's premises. This lets organizations keep their archived data behind their own firewall without having to make capital expenditure investments in new equipment and personnel. It allows them to focus management and backup resources on data that is used more frequently or is more valuable.

Sherpa Automates Migration Of E-Mail To The Cloud

June 15, 2010 03:00 PM
Sherpa Software, which makes e-mail archiving software for Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes, today announced new offerings to help customers and partners move e-mail from the customer premises into SaaS or cloud-based archives. According to IDC, the number of SaaS-based e-mail inboxes jumped from 10 million in 2007 to 20 million in 2009, and further growth is expected.

EMC Adds E-mail Supervision Tool To Archiving Suite

March 23, 2010 12:30 PM
It's been almost a year since EMC introduced SourceOne, its archiving platform that includes e-discovery and compliance capabilities to help companies manage ever-increasing stores of e-mail and instant messages. Now EMC has added SourceOne Email Supervisor to the suite. This module is designed to help companies monitor whether inbound and outbound messages are compliant with internal policies and external regulations.

Data Security Is A Federal Issue Now

January 27, 2010 09:00 AM
Just when you think you have dodged the data security bullet, here come the Feds. My view on data security of late has been that those who thought they needed to secure information have done it, and those who didn't were not in a big hurry to do it. Times are changing. The Federal Data Breach Notification Law that recently passed through the house is now on its way to the Senate and then on its way to you.
