CommVault Systems has enhanced Version 9 of its Simpana data management software, which it first announced in October 2010. Major new features in the software include OnePass, which will back up server data, archive it and report on it simultaneously. The company said the process could take less than half the time of separate processes.

It may soon be a non-issue for all data centers and applications. If you can get deduplication on primary storage for "free" from a performance perspective, what is the impact of primary storage on the other tiers of storage? Does primary storage deduplication kill archive and backup?

Tape Is Back? When Did It Leave?

Tape has been pronounced dead more often than I can remember, but it's important to note that it's usually disk vendors making the pronouncement. The reality is that tape is very much alive. When I ask about tape utilization in seminars, an overwhelming majority of attendees indicate they are still using tape. I've also seen several studies recently indicate tapeless environments account for less than 15 percent of the data centers. Tape is back, it really never left, and I believe it may be the time for it to thrive.

The Cloud Won't Be Like ILM

The best thing about comments to blogs is that sometimes they require a response that is so long it becomes a blog itself, or in the case of DanB's latest response to my SNW Blog, it can become two or even three. It was a great comment and underscores some of the mistakes that we in the analyst/media make when it comes to a subject like cloud storage. Dan's first point and the focus of this entry was that clouds sounded like the next ILM (Information Life Cycle Management). By that I take it that he meant we are guilty of over-hyping, much like we did with ILM.

The Cloud As Primary Storage

To this point and for the foreseeable future, cloud storage will largely be isolated to use as an archive or as a backup destination. At some point, however, cloud providers are going to start offering cloud storage as a primary storage location. What needs to happen to get there and how close are we? This differs from the discussion about primary storage that a software as a service cloud (Saas) provider will use. As I wrote about in this blog last year, these solutions will require the typical tier 1 storage capabilities. This blog is about secondary tier applications that don't have the very high performance demands of the primary applications within a data center.

A Pretty Good Disaster Recovery Plan

Symantec just released its 2010 State of The Data Center Survey. In the survey, respondents were asked to rate their disaster recovery plan and only 12 percent rated it as excellent. Even if you add in the 27 percent who thought their plan was "Pretty Good," that means more than half thought that their plans were less than pretty good. Still, the choice of "pretty good" struck me. Who wants to execute a recovery from a "pretty good" DR plan?

Disk For Archive Is Not Dead

In his recent blog "Copan's MAID Fades away," 3PAR's Marc Farley predicts that MAID is dead and that we can forget about disk for archiving applications. I usually agree with Marc but this time not so much. I believe that MAID is not dead and more importantly, neither is disk for archiving.
