March 07, 2013 03:18 PM
Mersive's Solstice software lets mobile devices connect wirelessly to projection systems and flat screens, eliminating the need for cords and adapters in conference rooms and campuses. But we're still a ways away from ubiquitous connectivity.Research Finds Outstanding Issues Could Derail Win 8 Migration
January 24, 2012 09:06 AM
Migration to Windows 8 won't be a sure thing, with a number of issues remaining to be addressed before Microsoft can expect the majority of its users to migrate to the new version of the operating system. A new survey from InformationWeek Analytics, "Research: Windows 8," finds that the migration strategy appears to be predicated on people migrating from Windows 7 to Windows 8, when it's clear that a significant number of existing users are still running Windows XP. This demonstrates the sort of problem that Microsoft is facing. The new OS is scheduled to come out in beta in February and for final shipment in the second half of the year.Windows 7 Surpasses Vista, But XP Still Dominates
August 02, 2010 11:43 PM
Windows 7 in July surpassed its predecessor Vista in global usage share, but the older XP continued to dominate by a wide margin, an analysis firm says. At the end of last month, Windows 7 had a 14.46% share, while Vista fell to 14.34 percent, according to NetApplications. When Microsoft released Windows 7 to retail in October 2009, Vista had an 18.83 percent share.Windows 7 Rolling Review: Wrap-Up

Deploying a new operating system across a company is a bit like conducting an orchestra: You need the proper instruments in place, and your timing and execution must be right to evoke harmony. Get it wrong and all you get is noise. So for all those would-be maestros of Windows 7, now is the time to take a close look at OS deployment software, which we've tested in our Rolling Review.Windows 7 Rolling Review: Avocent LANDesk Management Suite 9
February 24, 2010 08:30 AM
Last up in our rolling review of Windows 7 deployment solutions is Avocent's LANDesk Management Suite 9. Installation of LANDesk was relatively painless. The core management server, along with the database and Web management engine, can all be installed on a single box. LANDesk supports SQL Server 2005, 2008, and Oracle versions 10 and 11g for the back-end database. If you have fewer than 1,000 clients under management, you can get away with using SQL Express. As you scale beyond 3,000 clients, LANDesk strongly recommends you split the core management and database servers for maximum performance.Windows 7 Rolling Review: Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager R2
February 19, 2010 11:03 AM
In the next edition of our rolling review of Windows 7 deployment solutions, we test a product that has the inside track on Windows 7: Microsoft's System Center Configuration Manager (SSCM). The product was relatively easy to deploy because Microsoft delivered Configuration Manager to us inside a pre-built virtual machine (Hyper-V, of course). Normally, the product is delivered as a traditional software package. Smaller and medium-sized IT shops can run Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 on single server. Large organizations with thousands or tens of thousands of clients should run a separate management server and a database server (SQL Server, of course).Windows 7 Rolling Review: Kace KBOX 2000
February 11, 2010 04:06 PM
In a market full of software products, Kace immediately distinguishes itself in the OS deployment and client management space with its appliance. Of course, an appliance is just a cinderblock unless it delivers useful features and functions, so we put it to the test as part of our Windows 7 deployment rolling review. KACE sent in both the 1000 and 2000 series appliances for review, and to get the entire scope of features and functionality that Kace offers, you need both. The KBOX 1000 series focuses on client management, including client inventory, software distribution, app virtualization, remote control, rudimentary NAC and a Web-enabled help desk, among other things.Windows 7 Rolling Review: Zinstall Runs Windows 7 and XP
January 29, 2010 12:00 PM
If you've tried migrating a few users to Windows 7 already, you know that moving user files, applications, and settings from the old OS to the new can be a serious pain. Now organizations have an option from an upstart called Zinstall, which lets users run both XP and Windows 7 on the same computer.Windows 7 Rolling Review: Acronis Deploys Windows 7 With Ease
January 29, 2010 08:00 AM
Acronis' Snap Deploy 3.0 client imaging system focuses only on client imaging and deployment. If you're shopping for a full enterprise desktop management suite, look elsewhere. However, for organizations that simply want to deploy Windows 7 now, Snap Deploy 3.0 makes quick work of it.1 | 2 | Next Page »
