Acer Takes On Server/Storage Powerhouses

February 22, 2011 08:00 AM
With 2009 revenues of $17.9 billion, Acer is best known as a major player in the global PC market, but, in what the company calls a long-term commitment, its U.S. subsidiary is entering the commodity server and storage markets with a full lineup of products to be sold exclusively by resellers and the distribution channel. Acer America is targeting small to midsize businesses and high-performance computing applications with rack, blade and multinode solutions based on Intel Xeon and AMD Opteron processors, along with a variety of storage solutions from Hitachi Data Systems.

Unified Storage: What Is It Good For?

February 03, 2011 09:00 AM
There was a time when single-tasking data center equipment was all the rage. CPU cycles and RAM were at a premium, so it made sense to design equipment that did one thing and did it well. Intel has exploded this old assumption thanks to the continual proliferation of transistors according to Moore's Law: Today's processors, network adapters and buses have CPU cycles to spare, and most data center equipment is turning to software for differentiation.

Cruising For A Bruising: Dell Sinks EMC

February 03, 2011 08:00 AM
Carnival Cruise Lines has swapped out aging EMC Symmetrix storage (and Sun servers) for Dell EqualLogic SAN storage and PowerEdge servers, racking up savings of 7,000 hours per year for its shipboard IT staff. Symmetrix is a great platform, says Carnival's Doug Eney, VP of IS engineering, but it was time to upgrade and EMC's prices were too high. "We also looked at Clariion [servers], but didn't feel it was as resilient as we need. EqualLogic was able to meet our needs." Other storage companies that were evaluated included LeftHand, 3Par, NetApp and Compellent.

Data Center Consolidation Sparks Converged Infrastructure Deployment

January 27, 2011 01:34 PM
SIRVA, an international relocation and moving solutions provider, determined that acquisitions are a good way to grow a business. However, one repercussion from the strategy was inefficiency: Duplicate business functions were performed in various offices scattered across the United States. In streamlining its IT infrastructure, the corporation found itself at the forefront of the movement to consolidate data center products, a position that, to date, has paid dividends for the corporation.

Compellent - Taking On The Enterprise Challenge

December 08, 2010 07:00 PM
On Nov. 22, Compellent announced the newest release of StorageCenter version 5.4, new Live Volume software, new Enterprise Manager multisite tool capabilities, and next-generation hardware that is faster, stores more data and connects to FCoE and 10GbE iSCSI. Back in October, I wrote that Compellent was rising to the enterprise challenge. With this announcement, it's clear to me that Compellent is taking on the enterprise challenge and may be swinging the acquisition pendulum in their direction.

WAN Security Challenges Abound

June 03, 2010 10:38 AM
Protecting information and corporate assets has always been a tricky business, and today's computing environment just adds to the complexity. Remote offices and mobile users need just as much protection, and possibly more, than headquarters employees who sit behind carefully constructed layers of defense. SaaS applications and public cloud deployments mean sensitive data travel outside traditional network boundaries. And the Web presents a never-ending fountain of malware.
