One of the dirty little secrets of software as a service (SaaS) is how long it takes to get the service. A request for access to a SaaS application travels from the client device, across the corporate WAN, across the public Internet to the SaaS provider's data center where the app is hosted--and back--so a lot of time is spent making the connection, not to mention the hundreds or thousands of round trips made in just one session in which the app is being used. As it rapidly readies itself to count everyone in the country, the U.S. Census Bureau has tentatively begun tapping cloud computing to reduce the cost and accelerate delivery of its services to its employees and the public. Though census planning is a 10-year effort, the actual census takes place over only a few months. The cloud is an emerging platform that can ease the strain on application development, analysts at Forrester Research conclude in a report published Monday, "The Top Five Changes For Application Development In 2010."
