DIY Storage: Why I Built My Own SAN

March 29, 2013 02:36 PM
I built my own SAN to meet some storage needs at my job. In a series of posts I’ll cover the reasons why, how I did it, and the hardware and software I used.

False Disk Drive Failures Are a Real Problem

March 26, 2013 01:34 PM
New information shows disk drives report false failures with alarming frequency. False failures have real costs for data center operators. Here’s what the industry can do about it.

It’s A Solid-State Symposium

April 20, 2012 09:00 AM
Next week I’m off to sunny San Jose for the first Solid State Symposium and Storage Field Day. While Storage Field Day follows the general blogger’s tech-day format, the Solid State Symposium is a public event on Wednesday, when we’ll try to wrangle the future of solid state storage out of the sponsoring vendors and industry luminaries.

SSDs Continue Enterprise Penetration

April 04, 2012 09:00 AM
Flash/solid-state disk (SSD) drives are changing the way enterprise storage vendors are developing their products, says Gary Watson, CTO of disk-based data storage systems provider Nexsan, which just came out with its NST-Series of unified storage systems. The release follows LSI’s ongoing transition from spinning disks to solid state with its latest Nytro products, which are focused on bringing flash into the server. And in February, EMC announced that its PCIe/flash-based server cache technology, VFCache, is now available.

Marvell's New SSD Strategy: One Size Can Fit All

January 09, 2012 10:30 AM
Silicon developer Marvell is taking its first steps into the PCI Express (PCIe) SSD controller market with several new products built on the strategy that choice scalability will be the winning formula. The new controllers provide a core building block creating PCIe SSDs in flexible configurations that incrementally scale in cost, capacity and performance. This will enable SSD OEMs and system integrators to create flexible PCIe SSD configurations that eliminate SAS or SATA conversion for better I/O performance required by different market segments.

Two Companies Cope With Storage And Transfer Of Large Files

September 13, 2010 12:00 PM
Increasingly large, unstructured data files are inundating corporate data centers storage capacity and WAN connections. For companies that are using more and more videos, photographs and graphics, file sizes are naturally expected to grow, but in a recent Network Computing State of Storage survey [registration required], the majority of respondents said storage growth was 10-24 percent year over year. All of this contributes to the ongoing saga of what to do with this burgeoning data as it meets up with internal storage repositories and communications bandwidths that were designed for smaller files of day-to-day transaction processing, not for large data payloads.

Hard Drives Have A Future

August 27, 2010 09:30 AM
As flash-based solid state disks have entered the mainstream, users and analysts alike have been contemplating the end of the hard disk era. Even my compatriot George Crump wondered last week when SSDs would dominate the data center. While flash has displaced spinning disks in some applications like MP3 players where small size and shock resistance are at a premium over capacity, I don't see the disk drives we all know and love going away any time soon.

Does Primary Storage Deduplication Kill Archive And Backup?

July 02, 2010 10:19 AM
As we begin to test primary storage deduplication technology, our initial findings are that the latency it introduces may be a non-issue for many data centers and applications. It may soon be a non-issue for all data centers and applications. If you can get deduplication on primary storage for "free" from a performance perspective, what is the impact of primary storage on the other tiers of storage? Does primary storage deduplication kill archive and backup?

Data Protection Storage Is Different

May 12, 2010 01:00 PM
As data protection software becomes more intelligent, it may appear as though we need less of the storage hardware that holds protected copies of the production data. Many data protection software vendors are actively promoting the concept that you can use any disk system as a backup destination. Should you use a cheap SATA array or a data protection storage system?

The Cloud Won't Be Like ILM

April 06, 2010 04:00 PM
The best thing about comments to blogs is that sometimes they require a response that is so long it becomes a blog itself, or in the case of DanB's latest response to my SNW Blog, it can become two or even three. It was a great comment and underscores some of the mistakes that we in the analyst/media make when it comes to a subject like cloud storage. Dan's first point and the focus of this entry was that clouds sounded like the next ILM (Information Life Cycle Management). By that I take it that he meant we are guilty of over-hyping, much like we did with ILM.
