Flash/solid-state disk (SSD) drives are changing the way enterprise storage vendors are developing their products, says Gary Watson, CTO of disk-based data storage systems provider Nexsan, which just came out with its NST-Series of unified storage systems. The release follows LSI’s ongoing transition from spinning disks to solid state with its latest Nytro products, which are focused on bringing flash into the server. Increasingly large, unstructured data files are inundating corporate data centers storage capacity and WAN connections. For companies that are using more and more videos, photographs and graphics, file sizes are naturally expected to grow, but in a recent Network Computing State of Storage survey [registration required], the majority of respondents said storage growth was 10-24 percent year over year. As flash-based solid state disks have entered the mainstream, users and analysts alike have been contemplating the end of the hard disk era. Even my compatriot George Crump wondered last week when SSDs would dominate the data center. While flash has displaced spinning disks in some applications like MP3 players where small size and shock resistance are at a premium over capacity, I don't see the disk drives we all know and love going away any time soon.Does Primary Storage Deduplication Kill Archive And Backup?

The best thing about comments to blogs is that sometimes they require a response that is so long it becomes a blog itself, or in the case of DanB's latest response to my SNW Blog, it can become two or even three. It was a great comment and underscores some of the mistakes that we in the analyst/media make when it comes to a subject like cloud storage. Dan's first point and the focus of this entry was that clouds sounded like the next ILM (Information Life Cycle Management). By that I take it that he meant we are guilty of over-hyping, much like we did with ILM.Best of the Web
