Confusion Reigns On Cloud Storage, Backup
April 20, 2012 09:00 AM
Enterprises once relied on a variety of physical storage devices, both on-site and off, to manage backups--everything from tapes, disks and DVDs to USB drives. Now the cloud is replacing these storage options, providing additional functionality that enables users to not only back up data but also share and collaborate. However, while there are of plenty of cloud storage options available to businesses, there is a lot to consider before selecting a provider.Health Care Providers Shifting to the Cloud
July 26, 2011 05:37 PM
With the unstoppable growth of medical imagery, many health care providers are realizing that trying to do a data migration to a new storage system every few years is becoming next to impossible. Some providers I spoke with say that unless they shift to the cloud, they'll never be able to even fathom catching up with their data growth as they'll be stuck in a never-ending cycle of rebuying their next storage system and migrating data.Do Iron Mountain And Cirtas Exits Mean The Cloud Is Falling?
April 19, 2011 07:00 AM
Last week, market research firm Gartner let it slip that Iron Mountain was shuttering its cloud storage service, and reliable sources are telling me that cloud storage gateway startup Cirtas has let its marketing and sales staffs go so the company can concentrate on improving the product. Is this a trend? Is the cloud falling? Will we be left choosing all our IT products from the five families ... oops ... remaining suppliers: IBM, HP, Dell, Oracle and Cisco?Iron Mountain Digital Steps Out Of Cloud Storage; Nirvanix Steps In
April 12, 2011 08:49 AM
Well, it appears again that companies that are good at one thing won't necessarily be good at trying other things. Iron Mountain Digital, the public cloud offshoot from Iron Mountain--the company that stores papers in caves and giant vaults and drives around in vans all the time--has collapsed. Can Cloud Snapshots Replace Backup?
February 24, 2011 09:00 AM
I'm satisfied that snapshots and replication in conventional storage systems can serve the same function as more traditional backup schemes. While snapshots make satisfying the most common restore requests easy the limitations of most storage system's snapshot mechanism leave most organizations using snapshots as a supplement to, not a replacement for, backup copies. Does the cloud change the snapshot as backup calculus? Some cloud storage vendors say it does.Nirvanix Gains Increased Market Traction With Triad Of Cloud Solutions
January 14, 2011 01:18 PM
I blogged about Nirvanix here on Network Computing back in November, and opined that the time to execute with cloud offerings is now. I have been following Nirvanix closely since then, and speaking candidly with its customers. It is clear that the company is executing well, providing substantial value to its existing customers, gaining new customers and fine-tuning offerings in order to take the competition head on. Nirvanix has its sights set on the high end of the competitive spectrum. The company is making gains in market traction and turning prospects away from stalwarts like EMC and IBM.Nirvanix Success Attracts Funding And New Executive Leadership
November 10, 2010 09:53 AM
Today Nirvanix announced that it has secured additional funding of $10 million dollars and has appointed Scott Genereux as President, and Chief Executive Officer. These developments are designed to fortify the company's competitive position and expand the market penetration of its Storage Delivery Network (SDN) on a massive global scale. Genereux's successful track record of building business value propositions around storage solutions bodes well for Nirvanix as the company starts to penetrate new markets and attempts to take market share from traditional storage vendors and other cloud storage providers.Cloud Storage Enabled Applications
February 12, 2010 03:20 PM
CommVault's recent announcement of enabling cloud storage as an additional backup target for their application created a bit of buzz in the cloud storage community. As it should. CommVault along with Atempo, Symantec and others that are making cloud storage just another button to click will go a long way in its adoption. I think what is more interesting is the use of cloud storage by Independent Software Developer's (ISV) that are not your typical storage guys.CommVault Delivers A Cloud-Enabled Platform
February 05, 2010 01:00 PM
Everybody wants to go to heaven someday, but nobody seems to want to go now. Why so? Perhaps it's mere uncertainty. If we substitute the cloud for "heaven," the same seems to be true today. That is why it is so important for vendors to create products and services that can actually get clients to the cloud today while still keeping their feet on the ground. With that in mind, CommVault's ability to effectively extend its data management platform into the cloud provides a positive illustration that the cloud can provide real value today and not just someday. Such examples are important so that the cloud is not just dismissed as hype.Is D2D2C The Next Big Thing In Backup?
February 02, 2010 09:30 AM
Today CommVault announced that their Simpana integrated backup and archiving software can now use public cloud providers in addition to local disk and tape as a data store. I hope that CommVault is, as they were with deduplication, leading a new wave of disk-to-disk-to-cloud (D2D2C)backup and archive solutions. While I firmly believe that there's a lot of life left in tape, especially for long retention archives with relatively low access rates, 25 years of consulting to organizations has taught me that tape drives, like backhoes and other heavy equipment, should be left to trained professionals. Small and even mid-size organizations rarely handle tape properly, leaving them exposed to data loss.1 | 2 | Next Page »
