Bumps Ahead For Feds' Data-Center Consolidation

While the federal government has mandated that nearly 40% (more than 800) of its data centers be consolidated by 2015, the results of at least two recent studies indicate several concerns about the implications of the consolidation. According to the Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative (FDCCI), federal government data centers quadrupled between 1998 and 2010, from 432 to 2,094, and, on average, they have been using only 27% of their computing power. As a result, federal CIOs are looking to consolidate effectively without compromising data center management by embracing server virtualization, shifting to a "cloud-first" policy and through modular computing.

Companies selling network security technology typically boast about how well designed and effective their solutions are, whether it’s malware protection, intrusion detection or the latest-generation firewall. But John Vigouroux has been telling the security industry the rhetorical equivalent of "we’re doomed." He’s sharing a startling statistic from an FBI cyber-crime statistics report from 2011 (along with industry analysis) showing that while the amount of money spent globally on network security and the amount earned by cyber criminals were about even in 2007--between $21 billion and $22 billion each--by 2011 it wasn’t even close. Things will only get worse by 2013.

Juniper Networks claims its new line of universal access routers for use on service provider networks can deliver three times the throughput of competitive offerings. The routers are called "universal" because they provide network access for mobile devices, residential broadband and business networks. However, the initial rollout of the Juniper Networks ASX Series of Universal Access Routers is expected to be with mobile service providers building 4G, also known as LTE, networks.

Cisco Expands 40, 100 GbE Switching Portfolios

Cisco Systems is introducing new switches with 40 and 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) capabilities, which are the coming new standards for switching speeds on networks. The 40GbE capacity is now available on its Catalyst 6500 switching line for campus networks, while 100GbE is available on the Nexus 7000 line for data center and service provider networks. The company also announced two new fixed-configuration platforms providing high-density 10GbE switching, which is the fastest growing category of switches today.
