Interop Premieres New Technology; Everyone Wins
May 17, 2011 08:21 AM
One of the coolest displays I saw at Interop was not in Start-up City nor in the Czech Republic zone. It wasn't the Lamborghini that Securent rolled onto the floor, nor was it the Barracuda Bus. It was the fiber backplane that HP brought out from its R&D facility and had running as a proof of concept, as well as the number of vendors that had products--nearly all proof of concepts--in the InteropNet Openflow lab. Staying awake is hard after sitting through the sixth top-of-rack switch of the day. Showcases like HP's and Openflow's should be an important part of any trade show because they remind us why what we do is cool and fun.Interop's Best Of The Best, Network Concerns
May 13, 2011 11:00 AM
Interop, the IT industry's biggest networking event, closed out its 25th annual outing by selecting the best of the best of products to allocate, secure, manage and improve the performance of the increasingly extended IT environment. A total of 135 entries qualified for the Best of Interop, an event produced by UBM TechWeb, the publisher of Network Computing. Additionally, according to two surveys at Interop, there are major concerns about cloud management and the flood of consumer devices invading the corporate network.IBM Tigers To Tame The Cloud
May 11, 2011 02:45 PM
IBM's revenues from cloud computing are on track to hit $7 billion by 2015, a fact the company attributes in part to its decision last year to create small, highly specialized teams to pitch the benefits of the new-wave architecture to high-profile customers around the world. Known internally as Tiger Teams, the units are "the tip of the spear" in pursuing cloud engagements, said IBM Global Technology Services general manager Scott Hopkins, in an interview Tuesday following a keynote he delivered at the Interop technology conference in Las Vegas, at Mandalay Bay.Citrix CTO On Demanding Clarity From Cloud Vendors
May 11, 2011 01:36 PM
Citrix Systems CTO Simon Crosby sat down with Andrew Conry Murray at Interop 2011 for a candid question-and-answer session on a variety of subjects, including emerging cloud power centers--Citrix is a major player in some. The company is also pushing emerging standards on a variety of fronts, including cloud computing and application performance. Crosby talked about the company's goals for these efforts. He also advised IT to demand more vendor clarity about the cloud. What To See At The Interop Exhibit Hall

Yesterday I had a chance to walk the Interop show floor before it opened. Controlled chaos is a good word for it. It's hard to imagine that all the exhibitors and show staff get the exhibit hall ready in a little more than 24 hours. Forklifts are flitting around, carrying everything from equipment racks to rolls of carpet. Cherry pickers are rolling through the aisles hanging signage. Vendor system engineers are setting up booths, racking equipment and preparing demonstrations for the show. You can catch all of Techweb's Interop coverage at the Special Report Page. The Future Of Networking On Display At Interop

Saying there is a lot of change in networking is like saying the sun is hot. Virtually every aspect of networking in the LAN and the WAN is developing new core protocols and technologies to meet growing demand. Networking isn't just about bigger, faster, denser. The changes are about smarter networking that discovers optimal paths from point to point, ensuring zero packet loss. The changes are being driven by (and are driving) server, storage and network virtualization. And the changes are about converged networking where data loss is unacceptable, and the emergence of flatter, faster networks that break the N-tier model. There is quite a round-up of networking sessions and demonstrations at Interop. Here is a taste.InteropNet's IPv6 Plans

One of the more interesting aspects of attending Interop is seeing the demonstrations that the InteropNet team is putting on. At the upcoming show, the InteropNet is running several IPv6 capable networks that are supporting both exhibitors and attendees. This marks the first show since Interop returned its Class A address space to ARIN in 2010. If you are at Interop, check out the various InteropNet locations offering IPv6. I caught up with some of the InteropNet team by phone to talk about IPv6 while they were hot-staging the network prior to the show.IPv6 And DNS On The Interopnet

The early planning work on Interop is moving along. Glenn Evans, who is managing the Interopnet and characterizes the position (with tongue firmly planted in cheek) as "benevolent dictator," and the rest of the NOC team have the daunting task of building and maintaining a production network for attendees and exhibitors, as well as providing the infrastructure to demo new technologies. At this early stage, work is being done to figure out what to offer to the show attendees and exhibitors. "If Interopnet builds it, users will come" is not a given. Here is where they are now.
