Cisco Announces New Nexus 7700 and Fabric Architecture
June 27, 2013 05:30 PM
The new Cisco Nexus 7700 core switch is built for bandwidth, while Dynamic Fabric Automation aims to make data center networks more flexible and easier to configure.Juniper Gets To '1' With New QFabric Family
February 24, 2011 03:59 PM
Juniper finally got to 1 in its 3-2-1 strategy launched last year. The trend, to flatten the network, has been coming for a while. What's held back the flattening are little things, like being able to aggregate enough access ports over a high capacity and low latency interconnects, broadcast control, traffic management and, frankly, a strong driver to re-architect the network. But that hasn't stopped Brocade, Cisco and Juniper from coming out with some innovative data center network offerings. Of the three, Juniper's seems to require less of a commitment by IT, which I think will help the company open doors.Cisco's FabricPath and IETF TRILL: Cisco Can't Have Standards Both Ways
December 17, 2010 10:05 AM
Standards are standards for a reason. Standards allow customers to interconnect products with a hope that they will all work together easily and simply. It's how the Internet was built, though not without some problems, and how all the networking vendors built their businesses. No vendor, not even Cisco or Hewlett-Packard, can go it alone in enterprise networking. Even the whisper that a vendor is not standards-compliant can ruffle feathers and get danders up, so vendors come up with ways to give lip service to standards compliance when they really want to push their proprietary protocols. Vendors should innovate and address customer needs, but they should do so in a way that doesn't force customers into choosing either proprietary methods or standard protocols, something that Cisco seems to be doing with FabricPath and Transparent Connection of Lots of Links (TRILL).Cisco FabricPath: Enhancing TRILL: Standards Compatible

Cisco's announcement about FabricPath at CiscoLive cleared up the confusion about what FabricPath actually is. Cisco indicated that Nexus customers would have to choose between Cisco's own layer 2 multi-path protocol or TRILL, the other multi-path bridging standard that Cisco is supporting. A choice like that could cause lock-in to Cisco's proprietary protocol and product line. Cisco was also light on details about how FabricPath ehnahces TRILL. We asked Cisco for clarification on these points.Putting The Catalyst 6500 In Its Place
July 12, 2010 11:00 AM
The 6500 is a workhorse in the core and the data center. Network admins love to hate it and hate to love it. The variety of blades that can be inserted for in switch processing makes the platform applicable to many different network requirements. It's also an old platform and is getting pretty long in the tooth. With a paltry 80Gbps (full duplex) interconnect to the back plane, the 6500 simply isn't suited to stand as a next generation core data center switch. It's time to start thinking about putting it out to data center/LAN edge or as a core campus switch. Fortunately, you will have options for replacing the data center network. While I had this thought circulating in my head for awhile now, a blog Cisco's Rip and Replace Dilemma from Stuart Miniman at Wikibon, a follow-up by John furrier at Silicon Angle, and then a response by Steve Schuchart with Current Analysis prompted me to chime in. They are pretty smart characters, but I think I might be able to add something to the discussion.
