Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

Lessons Learned From 3Par & Data Domain

September 07, 2010 08:00 AM
In the past two years, we have been privy to two exciting bidding wars that ended in two-billion dollar payouts for both 3Par and Data Domain. Despite the fact that they were in two different ends of the storage market, there is a lot to be learned from both of these companies. The key factor is that both companies focused on the task at hand. They essentially did one thing really well. In the case of 3Par, it was simplifying block storage in the enterprise, and in the case of Data Domain, it was simplifying backup storage. Each company's focus made users' jobs easier, and users voted with their dollars.

EMC Beefs Up Its Deduplication Offerings

July 20, 2010 02:00 PM
EMC is expanding its deduplication storage system with a new midrange entrant into the Data Domain product family, the Data Domain DD670. The new platform offers up to 76TB of raw capacity and 56TB of usable capacity. EMC says customers can expect up to 2.7PB of logical storage capacity via deduplication. EMC has also announced a new deduplication option for Mainframes, the Disk Library for Mainframe (DLm). The option will allow a DLm960 to extend on-site retention, optimize replication and lower overall disk and tape storage costs. A third product, the DL5200, is a new scalable Virtual Tape Library (VTL) system reaching up to 2.8PB of logical capacity.

EMC Launches Software To Speed Dedupe Backups, Aims To Revitalize NetWorker

May 12, 2010 11:00 AM
EMC's Data Domain has announced DD Boost, a software client that helps speed backups by moving parts of the deduplication process from the Data Domain appliance to back up servers. EMC says the software improves the backup rate for Data Domain's high-end deduplication appliance, the DD880, from 5.4Tbytes per/hour to 8.8Tbytes per/hour. EMC says it will make the software client available for EMC NetWorker, the company's backup software line, in the second half of 2010

Dedupe Everywhere Changes Economics

With the new versions of Backup Exec and NetBackup due Monday, Symantec's finally joined CommVault, IBM, Atempo and most of their other backup software competitors by integrating data deduplication into their mainline backup software. Now that you can dedupe data your media server of your choice we have to ask the question "Where is the most cost effective place to dedupe backup data?"

Deduplicating Replication - Data Domain

December 16, 2009 12:41 PM
Data Domain is the next up in our re-interview blogs. As I have said, the deduplication method used will have impact on how replication will work in the environment. Data Domain is an inline only system. That means as data comes in, it is deduplicated on the fly. As a result, the replication process should be able to start sooner. Data Domain has been delivering replication capabilities for a while, and their product has some advanced capabilities.
