Nine Dell Acquisitions: From EqualLogic to Quest, Compellent to Boomi
July 03, 2012 02:15 PM
In recent days, Dell representatives made no bones about promoting the company’s own products over products it resells. While the approach makes sense, it’s a departure for Dell, which has historically been quite adamant about maintaining its reseller relationships even on products that directly compete with its own. But Dell’s own product portfolio is now much richer than it once was. Here are nine important Dell acquisitions leading to today. The Dell Storage Tribe Gathers at Dell Storage Forum

Financial details of the purchase price of today's announcement that Dell will acquire privately-held Wyse Technology were not released, but company executives put Wyse' 12-month revenues at $375 million, up 45% year-over-year. The associated server, storage and services revenues attached to the original thin-client sale average 5X, i.e. $5 of additional hardware, software and service sales for every $1 of the Wyse sale.Dell Updates EqualLogic Storage Line, Targets Linux And Acquires AppAssure

Dell is continuing to reinvent itself as a storage OEM with a series of product announcements that leverage its acquisitions, move it up-market toward the lucrative enterprise space and create new opportunities in the burgeoning Microsoft SharePoint market. Although the company ended its very successful reseller relationship with storage leader EMC only two months ago, Dell grew its storage platform revenues--including its Equallogic and Compellent units--15% year over year in 2011 and they now represent nearly 80% of its storage revenues and more than 90% of its storage profits. The company's stated objective is to be the third largest storage vendor behind EMC and IBM in the next couple of years.Dell's Storage Strategy To Wean Itself Off Of EMC

Dell is laying out its storage strategy to: exploit the value of several recent acquisitions, expand its product lines and gradually (though not completely) wind down its reseller relationship with storage hardware vendor EMC. Dell's $960 million acquisition of Compellent, completed in February, gives it a multiprotocol tiered storage area network (SAN) product line that's a direct competitor to EMC offerings. Also, the data compression and deduplication software Dell gained with the acquisition of Ocarina Networks in July 2010 will eventually be included across Dell's entire storage product line.Dell And Others Still Shopping For Storage

On Dec. 13, Dell announced it has "entered into a definitive agreement for Dell to acquire Compellent ... " Dell also said it expects the transaction to be accretive to Dell non-GAAP earnings in its fiscal year 2012. There is no doubt that I, along with others in the industry, have blogged and written quite a bit on this topic over recent days. There has been no bidding war, no firing of shots across the bow from one vendor to another, and no soaring stock price in this quickly executed company acquisition. In my opinion, Compellent as a brand gets a big boost now, and Dell has bolstered its storage line up. So what's next for the Compellent brand as it integrates within Dell, and is Dell finished with storage vendor acquisitions? The Win-Win-Win Scenario Of A Compellent And Dell Merger
December 13, 2010 09:26 AM
On Dec. 9, Compellent and Dell announced that they "are engaged in advanced discussions regarding a possible business combination involving the two companies." I blogged about Compellent here on Oct. 8 and one day before the joint Compellent-Dell announcement. Some voices in the industry, not associated with Network Computing, have raised thinly veiled arguments that question the sense, and value, of an acquisition of Compellent by Dell. In my opinion, Compellent will be a strong addition to both the Dell Virtual Information System (VIS) architecture and Data Center Solutions (DCS) capabilities. Should it come to fruition, this potential acquisition is a win-win-win for customers, Compellent and Dell.1 | 2 | 3 | Next Page »
