January 10, 2011 11:00 AMAs we've previously discussed in "What Comes After RAID? Erasure Codes," forward error correction coding is a leading contender to replace parity RAID as disk hardware evolves past the point where parity provides effective protection. The question remains: Are Reed-Solomon and related coding techniques the inevitable replacement for parity in the RAID systems of the future?
December 16, 2010 10:43 PMAs I mentioned a few blog entries ago, the basic math behind parity based RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Drives) solutions is starting to break down. While I think it's important for those of us that spend our days thinking about these things to raise the alarm, it's more important to think and write about the technologies that can take us past parity RAID. One major contender is Reed-Solomon erasure codes, which vendors are starting to use as an efficient alternative to parity or mirroring.
October 26, 2010 09:56 AMCleversafe announced a new version of its Cleversafe cloud storage platform with three key improvements in thin provisioning, secure transport, and disk balancing. Cleversafe Monday announced a strategic investment and development agreement with In-Q-Tel, a private, not-for-profit company launched by the Central Intelligence Agency in 1999 to identify and develop cutting-edge technology used for intelligence purposes.
August 03, 2010 03:26 PMCloud computing attracts a lot of attention, but it is also being examined closely for whether it meets specific business requirements. Data security tops executive concerns, but other issues such as availability and scalability are often mentioned as well. Cleversafe has come up with a very interesting approach that addresses these and other issues. Founded in 2004, Cleversafe is a small (about 40 employees) company headquartered in Chicago. The focus of its hardware is on data protection with an emphasis on confidentiality, integrity, and availability (CIA), the three core principles of information security as it pertains to data protection. Cleversafe sells its software integrated in storage server appliances, such as Slicestor, and Accesser dispersed storage routers.

June 09, 2009 09:18 PMThe cloud storage and cloud service markets are so robust there are hundreds if not thousands of offerings, and the markets are beginning to become segmented into specific use cases.
