Since opening its doors in 1995, the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas has been on a growth spurt. It expanded in 1999 and is now undergoing another expansion that will more than triple its current size. But it's not just the Hard Rock's footprint that has grown substantially. So has its data, and the time it takes to back it all up. In fact, it was taking Hard Rock's IT department more than 24 hours to do full backups, which had to be done once a week. The rest of the week was spent doing incremental backups, which was also time-consuming.

As we begin our dive into deduplication backup software, we will start with the guys that started it all: Avamar. Since the early part of this decade, Avamar, originally a standalone company, and later as part of EMC, has been working to convince people that delivering deduplication in the backup software and starting the process at the client, is the way to go. It seems like over the past few years they have been gaining steam, driven mostly by a clear articulation of where their source-side technology plays best, especially since one of those areas seems to be the VMware use case.

Now that you can dedupe data your media server of your choice we have to ask the question "Where is the most cost effective place to dedupe backup data?"

EMC And HP Battle For Laptop Backup

EMC and HP are launching backup software for PCs this week. EMC's Avamar 5.0 now includes agents that reside on an end user's machine. The client runs scheduled backups that include deduplication so that only changes to files and data are sent to the backup server. The 5.0 client software performs a full image backup, including files, file systems, system state and applications.
