Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

Modular Data Centers Best Suited For SMBs

March 05, 2012 09:00 AM
The typical data center was designed for finicky mainframes, but in the age of robust virtualized servers--not to mention economic considerations--many organizations are opting to tweak the data centers they have, according to the InformationWeek Analytics State of the Data Center Survey. Many are considering new data center designs rather than dealing with the cost and difficulty of retrofitting an outdated facility, but while modular data centers are growing in popularity, and available from enterprise heavyweights like Cisco, HP, IBM and Oracle, they appear to be better suited for SMBs.

Microsoft, Citrix And KVM Continue To Erode VMware's Virtualization Domination

March 01, 2012 11:04 AM
As virtualization continues its proliferation throughout the enterprise, Microsoft, Citrix and KVM are all expected to be strong contenders to erode VMware's market share, say industry observers.

Dell Data Center Rollout Features Next-Gen Servers, Network Virtualization Architecture

February 28, 2012 09:00 AM
Dell is introducing a new line of servers, storage hardware and a network virtualization architecture framework to meet the expanding demands on data centers to crunch petabytes of data. The company introduced the 12th generation of PowerEdge servers--seven models--some targeted at hyperscale environments, others optimized for server virtualization, and one intended for use in small or remote offices.

Consolidation, Scale-Out Architectures And Virtualization Drive 2012 Storage Trends

February 27, 2012 01:00 PM
Enterprise storage infrastructure still contains quite a bit of direct-attached storage (DAS), but SMEs are in the process of making the move to consolidated storage, a shift that has already taken place at the Fortune 500 level. Even as storage consolidation catches on in the enterprise, though, there is a trend towards building scale-out storage architectures.

Asigra Updates Cloud Backup, Extends NetApp Partnership

February 26, 2012 09:00 AM
Asigra's Cloud Backup software update, Version 11.2, offers deeper array snapshot integration, increased support for virtualization and mobile devices, increased performance, and service delivery enhancements. In addition, the company is extending its strategic partnership with NetApp to provide what it says is the first fully vetted joint offering from the NetApp Cloud Solutions Team, a data-processing-as-a-service solution that is intended to make it easier for telecommunications companies to launch backup services more quickly--in as little as six months, compared with up to 36 months. Both products are intended primarily for the high-end Tier 1 telecommunications market.

AppSense Unveils Smartphone Encryption

February 22, 2012 09:00 AM
DataLocker, which will enable smartphone users to encrypt sensitive information in personal cloud services such as Dropbox, is the first product to come out of the new research arm created by virtualization technology provider AppSense. Intended to create new computing technologies geared toward both end users and IT, the focus of AppSense Labs will be "to research technologies that include cloud, mobile and data, and to build prototype products that bring a consumer experience to IT," according to the company.

Cisco & Friends Debate Cloud Future

February 17, 2012 09:00 AM
Cloud computing is evolving to the point where unique clouds will be developed for specific industry verticals, such as healthcare, government and financial services, predicts a Cisco Systems executive speaking at the CloudConnect 2012 conference this week in Silicon Valley. This runs contrary to what some have called the Coke versus Pepsi rule--that companies would not want to be in multitenant cloud environments with their competitors.

Nimbula Enhances, Adds Features In Cloud OS

February 15, 2012 11:00 AM
Seeking to bring cloud computing features to the VMware virtualization private cloud space, Nimbula has announced a new version of its Nimbula Director cloud operating system. In addition to supporting the VMware ESXi hypervisor, Version 2.0 is intended to support VMware's Cloud Foundry platform as a service (PaaS) solution. The company also said it is now a member of VMware's Technology Alliance Program. Other enhancements in this version include the ability for third parties to write software for the Nimbula Director platform, as well as the ability to manage and monitor applications, provide Dynamic Name Service and virtual private network services, and add features intended to make the software more enterprise-ready by improving its scalability.

EMC VFCache: Project Lightning Strikes

February 13, 2012 09:00 AM
EMC's recent announcement of the culmination of the code-named Project Lightning resulted in the new VFCache solution, a server-based flash cache, which may be used as a complement or alternative to flash storage that appears as if it were a disk drive. This lightning strikes twice, though not in the same spot. The first is dramatically improved I/O performance for customers and the second is the challenge that VFCache brings to competitors trying to distinguish their own flash storage solutions.

Easing Some Of Virtual Security's Complexities

February 06, 2012 01:00 PM
Virtualization and cloud computing pretty much dominate the IT world, but security and compliance with IT standards are neither trivial concerns nor going away any time soon. But in some ways, security is easier to accomplish in virtual systems than in physical ones.
