Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

A Network Computing Webinar:
SDN First Steps

Thursday, August 8, 2013
11:00 AM PT / 2:00 PM ET

This webinar will help attendees understand the overall concept of SDN and its benefits, describe the different conceptual approaches to SDN, and examine the various technologies, both proprietary and open source, that are emerging. It will also help users decide whether SDN makes sense in their environment, and outline the first steps IT can take for testing SDN technologies.

Nefsis Delivers Videoconferencing Infrastructure From The Cloud

July 15, 2011 12:30 PM
Nefsis has begun offering, as a cloud-delivered service, the network connectivity and bandwidth management tools necessary to send video over corporate networks. Nefsis says that its cloud offering includes tools to maintain quality of service (QoS) standards for videoconference feeds and to help network administrators set traffic priorities that, when necessary, give video traffic right-of-way over applications such as email.

Edgewater Prices SBCs For The Masses

May 26, 2011 01:30 PM
Targeted at small to midsize businesses and branch offices, Edgewater Networks' all-in-one EdgeMarc 250 Series Enterprise Session Border Controller, an integrated Ethernet switch, reportedly simplifies the management, improves the performance and reduces the costs of converged voice, video and data networks. However, what sets the company's latest Session Border Controller (SBC) apart from competitors is its price, says Ira Weinstein, senior analyst, Wainhouse Research.

Cisco Unleashes Device-Agnostic Unified Communications

March 04, 2011 08:00 AM
Cisco is upping the unified communications stakes with the launch of Cisco Jabber, which will bring presence, instant messaging, voice and video, voice messaging, desktop sharing and conferencing to the device of your choice.

Cisco Escalates Video-Everywhere Push

February 24, 2011 10:00 AM
The situation is simple: More video data requires bigger and faster networks, and as the leading network vendor, Cisco has a vested interest in facilitating this video growth. Over 50 percent of all Internet traffic today is video, and by 2014 the volume will be 90 percent, says the company. While the scope of video communications (including Internet video calling, video instant messaging, video monitoring and Webcam traffic) is currently relatively small, it is expected to experience substantial long-term growth in the 2014-2019 time-frame.

My Five 2011 Predictions

January 03, 2011 10:27 AM
What's going to happen in 2011? First, we'll continue to see some cool technology and use cases in cloud computing and unified communications, but I think adoption of both will be slower than expected. We will also start to see more about Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) standards compliance and interoperation, particularly with FCoE and multipath routing protocols like Transparent Interconnection of Lots of Links (TRILL) and Short Path Bridging, though I am not convinced that the networking industry will rally around either interpretation. I think virtual desktops are going to remain as popular as they are now--not very popular at all. For each prediction, I am going to make a measurable statement, and I'll check back at the end of 2011 to see how I fare.

SMBs To Go Digital Voice In 2011

December 16, 2010 08:00 AM
Digital voice communications, voice over IP and IP PBX will capture a big chunk of the U.S. small and midsize business market next year, but not without significant anxiety. According to a new survey from AMI-Partners ("2010 VoIP Update-U.S. SMB Market"), almost one-third of small (one to 99 employees) and 50 percent of midsize (100 to 999 employees) businesses say that VoIP will become critical to their business operations during the next 12 months.

Avaya: CEBP Too Complex

December 15, 2010 08:00 AM
Avaya upgraded its Communication Enabled Business Process (CEBP) under the brand Avaya Agile Communication Environment (ACE) release 2.3, in the process essentially admitting that its initial attempt to incorporate Web services into PBX design was too much for many of today's business users. With the new release, Avaya is pushing three themes: tighter integration with Avaya Aura; enhanced integration with systems such as Microsoft Office Communications Server (OCS), IBM Lotus Notes and Sametime environments; and greater control over communications sessions.

Siemens Enhances OpenScape Suite 2011 With Video, Mobility, Conferencing

December 07, 2010 11:41 AM
Siemens Enterprise Communications is building on OpenScape UC Server 2010--its March release of a unified communications portfolio for the data center and virtualized environments--with a set of collaboration, mobility and video tools.

Cisco Eyes New Video Opportunities

November 16, 2010 10:00 AM
Cisco is continuing its assault on the telepresence and the high-definition video teleconferencing market that was accelerated earlier this year with company's $3.4 billion acquisition of Tandberg. The numbers are compelling, says Cisco: over 50 percent of all Internet traffic today is video, and within three years the volume will be 90 percent, and it wants a bigger slice of the video pie.

IBM Lotus Connections 3.0 Includes Social Business Features

November 11, 2010 11:00 AM
IBM used a conference on enterprise collaboration this week to introduce Lotus Connections 3.0, an update of its enterprise collaboration platform that also includes features to help set up a social networking site to connect a company's employees, partners and customers. Despite some resistance from enterprises to engage in social networking, such as on Facebook, IBM said there are aspects of it that are helpful to business growth.
