Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

When Will Solid State Dominate? It's Not That Complicated

August 19, 2010 09:00 AM
Sitting at the very well attended Flash Memory Summit, by far the number one question being asked is "When will solid state storage dominate the market?" Is it really that complicated? SSD domination or at least acceptance, like all things in storage comes down to performance, reliability and price. While performance should be a clear winner for solid state storage there are issues to be addressed. The first is dealing with write performance.

Adaptec Maxiq SSD Caching Solution With Microsoft Technology Demonstrates Dramatic I/O Acceleration

March 25, 2010 12:11 PM
Adaptec, Inc. today revealed benchmarking results for its MaxIQ SSD Cache Performance Solution. Integrating an advanced solid state storage control technology developed by Microsoft Corp., the solution is licensed and has been further enhanced by Adaptec. Using a simulation of a dynamic brokerage application environment, Adaptec consistently demonstrated a 3.2 times increase in system I/O (input/output) performance over the best results of a similar system without SSD caching. An increase in performance of 3.2 times can translate into a savings in capital and operating costs of up to 70 percent.

Pliant Claims 2.3 Million IOPS With Lightning SSD

March 15, 2010 04:00 PM
Pliant Technology has released the results of independent testing, indicating that its Lightning family of Enterprise Flash Drives (EFDs) can reach 2.3 million I/O operations per second (IOPS). This suggests that data centers using the drives in their servers could see significantly faster performance than with competing drives. The Lightning line, which consists of a 2.5-inch and two 3.5-inch drives, has been shipping since September to licensees, says product manager C.T. Chu, though he refrained from naming them.

10 Years Of Wi-Fi: Lessons Learned

August 14, 2009 04:09 PM
It's been about 10 years since I tested the first batch of 802.11 products for Network Computing. A lot has happened with Wi-Fi since then, almost all of it good. As a grizzled veteran of the broadband wireless industry, I reflect on some of the lessons I've learned.

Notes on a Nine Year Study of File System and Storage Benchmarking

July 16, 2009 06:05 PM
Benchmarks are most often used to provide an idea of how fast some piece of software or hardware runs. The results can significantly add to, or detract from, the value of a product (be it monetary or otherwise). For example, they may be used by potential consumers in purchasing decisions, or by researchers to help determine a system's worth.
