Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

A Network Computing Webinar:
SDN First Steps

Thursday, August 8, 2013
11:00 AM PT / 2:00 PM ET

This webinar will help attendees understand the overall concept of SDN and its benefits, describe the different conceptual approaches to SDN, and examine the various technologies, both proprietary and open source, that are emerging. It will also help users decide whether SDN makes sense in their environment, and outline the first steps IT can take for testing SDN technologies.

Networking Struts IT's Stuff At Interop Las Vegas

May 03, 2011 01:13 PM
Next week, the IT industry's largest and longest-running independent conference and trade show, Interop, will explore all things network-related. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Interop Las Vegas--which will be held May 8 to 12, at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center--is expected to draw thousands of professionals and more than 350 exhibitors, and will feature extensive network-related education and training opportunities, says Lenny Heymann, Interop general manager. The event is produced by UBM TechWeb, publisher of Network Computing.

Data Center Diversity Drives IT Agendas

May 02, 2011 12:57 PM
For the final chapter in Network Computing's five-part examination of Cisco's role in-- and the implications for--changes transforming the data center, we take a closer look at these changes and what they may mean for the near future. The first key to understanding this brave new world is the private cloud and IT as a service, says analyst David Hill, principal, Mesabi Group.

Distributed Core And East-West Routing--The Network Is Changing

April 28, 2011 01:43 PM
Applications and data center infrastructures are changing, and this puts a strain on conventional IT architecture. A number of recent announcements have really put this in perspective, with key network infrastructure components devolving from a centralized "hub and spoke" model to one that might even deserve to be called "cloud." Two key harbingers of this change are the shift from "North-South" to "all direction" network traffic and the decentralization of network device intelligence.

Force 10 Lays Out Standards-Based Next Generation Networking Vision

April 27, 2011 08:00 AM
Force 10 is the latest networking vendor to announce a comprehensive vision for data center networking. Dubbed Open Cloud Networking, the idea is to use standard protocols to interconnect networking gear paired with their Open Automation capabilities, and offer integration and interoperation with network management and systems orchestration management servers. The company's announcement includes additional automation features and new hardware to support the vision. Force 10 is not the first to the table, nor is its vision as grand as Cisco's or Juniper's, but the focus on standards support should resonate with companies that rely on multiple vendors.

Putting Controller-Based Networks' Security Risk In Context

April 12, 2011 03:07 PM
OpenFlow is starting to gain some buzz in the industry, with a demonstration at the upcoming Interop show in Las Vegas and vendors starting to adopt the protocol. However, as others begin to learn about OpenFlow and controller-based networking, complaints about single points of failure and single targets of attack get fired off in an almost knee-jerk reaction. Let's stop and take a breath. Single points of failure and single points of attack are common issues in networking and, frankly, have been dealt with in many ways. These objections are non-issues.

Four Steps On The Path To IPv6

April 11, 2011 09:00 AM
Does this remind you of Y2K? The hard reality that the Internet is running out of IPv4 addresses recently hit the Wall Street Journal and New York Times. You know what comes next: business executives get to wondering just how this IPv6 thing will impact their businesses.

Enterasys Launches Latest Network Switches

April 06, 2011 10:30 AM
Enterasys Networks has announced the K-Series, a new family of edge switches, as well as the A4, a new model of stackable switch. The devices are managed with the Enterasys Network Management Suite.

Marvell Tackles The I/O Problem

April 04, 2011 10:45 AM
Marvell Technology Group--primarily known for its storage, communications and consumer silicon solutions--is unveiling a virtual storage accelerator that addresses the I/O choke-point that has been plaguing the IT industry for years. The company says that its DragonFly VSA board, which plugs directly into all commercially available servers, will deliver 10x server I/O performance; reduce network-attached storage/storage-area network/direct-attached storage (NAS/SAN/DAS) costs by more than 50 percent; and cut power and space costs.

Cisco, IBM And Other Top Vendors Push Smart Networking Standard

March 25, 2011 09:18 AM
Seventeen major technology companies--including Deutsche Telekom, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Verizon and Yahoo--have banded together to develop and promote a new approach to networking called Software-Defined Networking (SDN) through a non-profit foundation, the Open Networking Foundation (ONF). Other founding members of the ONF include Broadcom, Brocade, Ciena, Cisco, Citrix, Dell, Ericsson, Force10, HP, IBM, Juniper Networks, Marvell, NEC, Netgear, NTT, Riverbed Technology and VMware.

OpenFlow Coming To InteropNet Labs

March 21, 2011 09:48 AM
One of the most interesting aspects of Interop is the Interop Labs area on the show floor, which highlights new and emerging technologies. In years past these technologies have included VPNs, network access control systems and various Trusted Computing Group projects. This year, InteropNet's OpenFlow Lab is going to showcase OpenFlow, with live demonstrations of the OpenFlow protocol. Openflow may well become an important networking protocol that will have significant impact on how you can deploy and manage networks.
