Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

Cisco Survey Shows Network Tops Challenges for Cloud Adoption

May 08, 2012 09:00 AM
Cisco rolls out a new survey, router and more news at Interop. Learn what the networking giant discovered about the increase in cloud adoption, and the obstacles.

EMC Unveils More Flexible IT Bundling

April 12, 2012 09:00 AM
These days, companies basically have two options for bringing new information technology into their data centers. They can acquire all the servers, storage, networking and software from different vendors, try to put it all together and make it work, or they can buy one big appliance that’s simpler to set up but is of a fixed configuration. EMC is offering a third option that combines the best attributes of the previous options, which it calls VSPEX.

If I Were King Of The Wireless Jungle

April 11, 2012 09:00 AM
Given the number of players involved across all of today’s wireless and networking spaces, it is pretty amazing that our mobile connectivity is as good as it is. Regardless of what 802.11 standard you connect with, or what carrier facilitates your mobile data, the wireless world of today is generally impressive. But it could be better. If Wireless World were mine to run, here’s what I’d change. (Cue the day dream sound effects and wavy fading video.)

IBM Serves Up New Datacenter Architecture

April 11, 2012 09:00 AM
IBM has introduced what it considers a new category of servers, a family of “expert integrated systems” called PureSystems. The company says PureSystems go beyond the various converged infrastructure or unified system approaches of its peers by adding a new middleware layer that aims to automate both infrastructure and applications, offering workflows from IBM itself, from its third-party partners, and offering IT the ability to define its own workflows.

I'm Your Customer, Not Your QA Department!

April 02, 2012 11:00 AM
Bugs are operational failures by vendors and that not only wastes company's time tracking down, but has the long term impact of stopping companies from adopting new products and features for the sake of reliability. Here are 4 misconceptions vendors tell themselves, and us, about software bugs.

HP-Polycom Partnership May Boost Lync Adoption

March 27, 2012 01:00 PM
HP and Polycom are taking their partnership to a new level, combining HP’s networking technology and Polycom’s videoconferencing products to deliver Microsoft’s Lync unified communications platform to the enterprise. An HP representative says that while many Lync licenses have been sold by Microsoft, several of those deployments are on hold because of the complexity of integrating the three elements--complexity that the two partners aim to address.

Networking In The Cloud

March 22, 2012 09:30 AM
In discussing network design with my clients, I talk about how routers, firewalls and other network gear can be interconnected to provide a scalable and redundant IP network. These foundations of network design apply to networks composed of tangible components or the virtualized infrastructure that extends corporate data centers to the cloud. I find that the networking aspects of cloud computing are frequently overlooked or addressed as an afterthought.

Dell Acquires Security Specialist SonicWall

March 13, 2012 02:32 PM
Dell on Tuesday said it reached a deal to acquire SonicWall with an eye to expanding its presence in the market for systems that help businesses fend off a wide range of cyber-attacks. Privately-held SonicWall specializes in so-called Unified Threat Management platforms, which combine multiple security systems into a single appliance.

Using MPLS In The Enterprise

February 23, 2012 10:00 AM
In the data center, the MPLS/VPN architecture offers an attractive alternative to increasing the size of Layer 2 domains. Some players in the industry are promoting protocols such as Transparent Interconnection of Lots of Links (TRILL) to solve Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) scalability problems.

Cisco And Deloitte Wrong: Good Practices More Impactful Than Vendor Choice

February 21, 2012 02:57 PM
Cisco is fighting back against the notion that a multivendor network can simplify operations and reduce TCO. The networking giant commissioned a report by Deloitte that finds equipment operation costs will increase over the life of a network that uses equipment from disparate vendors. The fact is, one vendor versus multiple vendors is the wrong fight. Sound management practices and smart production selection will have a bigger impact on your IT costs than the number of vendors you use.
