Brocade has announced Network Advisor, new software that provides a single management console across the company's product lines, including SAN switches, Ethernet switches and WLANs. Network Advisor also supports Fibre Channel, FCoE, IP and MPLS. The offering unites the company's previously separate management products, Brocade Data Center Fabric Manager (DCFM) and IronView Network Manager (INM), which came from the 2008 acquisition of Foundry Networks. In addition to managing its own products, Network Advisor will interoperate with management tools from vendors such as VMware, IBM and EMC. In the 500 or so years it feels like I've been working with computers of one sort or another, I've noticed that shiny new technologies follow similar trajectories. With FCoE, we've reached what Gartner calls the "Peak of Inflated Expectations," and what I call the "ATM Can Fix Everything" moment, named after the timely combination of IBM introducing desktop ATM cards and a Visa commercial in the mid 1990s. Sorrento Networks announced today the availability of its new Tunable XFP, a new feature in its GigaMux 3200 platform for all of its 10G services. An XFP is the 10G laser signal on Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) platforms. A traditional XFP has a discrete channel assigned to it as it is manufactured. Up until now, if a WDM network had only one specific channel available, the network operator had to purchase a discrete XFP for that channel. Today, using Sorrento's world-class management system, a network operator can select channels in real-time and incorporate those changes immediately. To build-out enterprises we utilize technologies in all forms. From the routers that shape the network to interrupters that understand the software powering our web servers, third parties have a hand in how secure our enterprise is. It is important when selecting third party technologies that security be kept in mind but we don't always get much of a choice. If we need a desktop operating system, we are pretty limited. If we need a widget for our website, however, we have more options. No matter the technology, ask the questions that matter to you around security. In the coming months, I am going to be spending a lot of time getting up close and personal with networking vendors' data center product sets. Jim Metzler and I are working on a data center networking RFI that Network Computing will publish, along with the vendor responses, in October. Jim and I are also going to present the results at the Interop NY show in October. I am looking forward to developing the RFI and reviewing the responses. In the last two years, there have been a ton of changes in the data center networking space driven by virtualization, data and storage networking consolidation, improvements in hardware efficiency, and new protocols to support increase demand. Typically, data centers are isolated enough from the campus LAN have unique demands that using a different vendor than your campus LAN makes sense.
