Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

Ground Rules For Mobilizing Users

February 10, 2010 03:30 PM
Last week, I discussed rolling user-owned mobile devices into your mobility plans. While letting the users pay for their own wireless access may be a boon to the company's bottom line, it can also snowball into a nightmare for administrators dealing with supporting a slew of new devices. A little advanced work and planning can help thwart the dark side of mobility: the threat of unending calls to help desk, security threats and general chaos. First and foremost, you'll need to set some ground rules.

Banning iPhones Leaves Money On The Table

February 05, 2010 10:30 AM
Like many others, I spent a couple of hours last week scanning through the gadget websites and feverishly refreshing my browser to get all of details of Apple's latest wonder, the iPad. Despite some critical panning from the pundits, gadget-friendly consumers will no doubt stand in line for hours to buy one when it ships in couple of months. For those talented folks in IT, the iPad release day will bring with it a chorus of users asking a single question: "Can I get my work e-mail on it?" While the path of least resistance for most administrators might be to simply say no, I would like to suggest that it's time to rethink any corporate-owned smartphone policies that still exist within your organization.

It also provides visibility to both the user and IT into how well the mobile device, as well as the networks it uses, are serving the user's remote needs.

Sun's Virtualbox Teleportation: Neat Trick, Not A Game Changer

December 04, 2009 07:57 AM
News was rife this week about Sun's inclusion of teleportation within its virtualization platform, VirtualBox 3.1. With teleportation, virtual machines can be moved, uninterrupted between disparate hosts—including those on different operating systems, different classes of computer (e.g. server to client) and even different CPUs (e.g. Intel to AMD). Sun hailed the innovation as adding a key capability to the platform to the data center. Analyst Randy George, however, doesn't see it as being critical.
