Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

A Network Computing Webinar:
SDN First Steps

Thursday, August 8, 2013
11:00 AM PT / 2:00 PM ET

This webinar will help attendees understand the overall concept of SDN and its benefits, describe the different conceptual approaches to SDN, and examine the various technologies, both proprietary and open source, that are emerging. It will also help users decide whether SDN makes sense in their environment, and outline the first steps IT can take for testing SDN technologies.

Pure Storage SSDs Address VDI, Database Challenges, But Is Focus Too Narrow?

May 16, 2012 09:35 AM
SSD vendor Pure Storage looks to solve the performance issues challenging VDI and database apps, but at least one analyst wonders if the company's focus is too narrow.

It’s A Solid-State Symposium

April 20, 2012 09:00 AM
Next week I’m off to sunny San Jose for the first Solid State Symposium and Storage Field Day. While Storage Field Day follows the general blogger’s tech-day format, the Solid State Symposium is a public event on Wednesday, when we’ll try to wrangle the future of solid state storage out of the sponsoring vendors and industry luminaries.

Enterprise Flash Cache-ing Up To HDDs

April 18, 2012 11:00 AM
Although the well-documented shortage of hard disk drives led many industry watchers to believe there would be a significant move to solid-state drives (SSDs) at the end of last year, that actually hasn’t been the case because many OEMs ordered excess inventory of SSDs. SSDs' higher cost compared with HDDs also makes lumping the two in the same category unfair.

SSD Opportunity & Threat To Storage Vendors

April 11, 2012 09:00 AM
In part two of our examination of the state of enterprise SSDs/flash storage, we look at the implications for vendors, a mix of new and existing companies seeking to capitalize on a large and growing opportunity.

LSI Goes All Flashy

April 03, 2012 12:50 PM
LSI has made several moves in the past few months that make it clear the company wants to evolve with the storage market as it makes the transition from spinning disks to solid state. LSI's latest solid-state products, the Nytro line, concentrate on bringing flash into the server, a transition I'm especially interested in. The company has also announced the first tool I’ve seen to help you figure out how flash can speed up your applications.

Two More Stealthy Solid-State Storage Startups

March 01, 2012 09:00 AM
My last post discussed, or at least mentioned, all the startups, and re-startups, building storage systems designed around flash memory that have made public announcements. Most startups spend the time they're developing Version 1.0 of their products in stealth mode so they can pop up fully formed like Athena from the skull of Zeus. We at DeepStorage have developed our own startup detection system that ferrets out those flying under the radar. In this column we'll look at a pair of stealth startups: XtremIO and Proximal Data.

Solid State Drives New Wave of Storage System Startups

February 28, 2012 09:00 AM
It was just last year that many of us in the storage chattering class were talking about how the market for mainline storage systems had consolidated after 3Par and Compellent were swallowed up by HP and Dell, respectively, leaving the market with just one or two smaller vendors to keep the big boys honest. That discussion failed to recognize that solid state storage had made the transition to the mainstream, and that there was a new wave of startups building storage systems optimized for flash.

FAST Paper Casts Doubt on SSD Future

February 21, 2012 11:00 AM
At last month's FAST (File and Storage Technologies) conference, researchers from UCSD and Microsoft Research presented a paper, titled "The Bleak Future of NAND Flash Memory" that's put the rosy all-flash-all-the-time future predicted by some in doubt for the long term. The gist of the paper's argument is that the physics of flash, and the researchers' testing, indicate that as flash density increases, the life and performance of flash will degrade to the point that by 2024 flash will no longer be a viable solution.

EMC Delivers On Server-Based Flash Storage

February 06, 2012 09:00 AM
Originally unveiled last May and scheduled to ship in 2011, EMC's PCIe/flash-based server cache technology, code-named Project Lightning, is now available under the name of VFCache. The enterprise storage giant has been the leader in enterprise flash drive capacity since entering this market in 2008, shipping more than 24 petabytes in 2011, an eight times increase in customer shipments since 2009, says Mark Sorenson, senior VP and general manager of EMC's Flash Business Unit.

Is A Hybrid Disk Drive In Your Future?

December 05, 2011 09:49 AM
Seagate this week announced an updated version of its Momentus XT hybrid disk drive. By combining flash and a spinning disk, hybrids promise most of the performance of an SSD at the cost per gigabyte of a hard drive. The new version comes pretty close to delivering on that promise.
