Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

Facebook-Led Open Compute Project Plans The Future Of The Data Center

November 08, 2011 11:22 AM
There’s a new open source project--led by giant companies such as Facebook, Amazon and Dell--that is looking to change data center hardware in the same way that traditional open source projects have impacted software.

Emulex Tunes Up I/O Monitoring And Analysis Solution

November 03, 2011 08:16 AM
The new 2.0 release of OneCommand Vision delivers increased scalability, usability improvements, custom alerting, and added operating system and hypervisor support, says Emulex. The software, which addresses the proverbial "blind spot" in the data center--namely, I/O--analyzes end-to-end I/O latency, various protocol events and other critical performance metrics, says Emulex VP Shaun Walsh. "That has really been the key, understanding the latency; the more you eliminate latency, the easier it is to achieve SLAs."

Cisco Broadens Data Center Portfolio

October 18, 2011 11:00 AM
With spending on data center hardware recovering and expected to grow to $98.9 billion this year and approach $130 billion by 2015, Cisco is expanding its data center portfolio. The networking giant is introducing second-generation capabilities for the Nexus 7000 family and Cisco FabricPath support for the Nexus 5500 switch; new switches with sub-microsecond latency to the Nexus 3000 ultra-low-latency switching family; and a virtualized version of its Adaptive Security Appliance to deliver consistent security for virtualized and cloud environments.

QLogic Sets The Stage For Networking's Future

September 29, 2011 11:39 AM
Networking and ASIC developer QLogic is building out its Adaptive Convergence strategy with new adapters, switches and routers that power 16-Gbit Fibre Channel or 10-Gbit data center Ethernet networks from the same hardware. The company's portfolio offers "any-to-any" connectivity by building in TCP/IP, iSCSI, FCoE and native Fibre Channel. The announcements included FlexSuite adapters, Universal Access Point switches and intelligent Storage Routers (iSR).

Meg Whitman Replaces Apotheker As CEO At HP

September 23, 2011 11:00 AM
In a surprise development, HP has named former eBay CEO Meg Whitman to replace Leo Apotheker as president and CEO of Hewlett-Packard, based on disappointment in Apotheker's failure to execute on the company's new strategy. Whitman pledged support for HP's strategy of building its enterprise software business and making a decision by the end of the year on whether to spin off its Personal Systems Group (PSG), which sells desktop, laptop and tablet computers to consumers.

Assessment: Brocade Network Subscription

September 01, 2011 09:00 AM
Network Subscription is an acquisition model that lets companies pay for network ports when they are used. As monthly demand changes, the port count and costs rise and fall. This is a good model for companies with large differences between normal and peak usage, though subscribers pay more over time compared with a capital purchase. It is not a fit for companies with small variations in demand. Network Subscription doesn't include Fibre Channel ports. .

Brocade Announces Network Subscription And VDX Switches At VMworld

August 30, 2011 02:15 PM
Brocade’s Network Subscription, new switches and Network Advisor enhancements are all aimed at establishing Brocade as a data and storage player in cloud infrastructure. Network Subscription brings flexible, on-demand costs to networking—as flexible as installing hardware can be—where enterprises only pay for the ports they need when they need them. The new VDX switches offer more options for Brocade's Virtual Cluster Switching (VCS), while Network Advisor catches up with competitors' offerings by enhancing integration with VMware’s vSphere.

Private Cloud In A Box

August 18, 2011 07:00 AM
With Microsoft and Google both heavily utilizing containerized data centers for compute capacity, it’s hard not to think about the applicability for enterprise and government private clouds. While containers vary widely, the general concept is that they are a self-contained data center environment complete with network, compute and storage, as well as necessary cooling.

Data Center Pricing Schedules: Driving Positive Vendor Behavior

August 16, 2011 02:36 PM
One of the most scrutinized and highly negotiated elements of an IT outsourcing (ITO) agreement for infrastructure is the resource pricing schedule. Like a tax table or any other financial schedule, the ITO rate structure has a significant impact on the behavior of those governed by it--in this case, the service provider.
