Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

A Network Computing Webinar:
SDN First Steps

Thursday, August 8, 2013
11:00 AM PT / 2:00 PM ET

This webinar will help attendees understand the overall concept of SDN and its benefits, describe the different conceptual approaches to SDN, and examine the various technologies, both proprietary and open source, that are emerging. It will also help users decide whether SDN makes sense in their environment, and outline the first steps IT can take for testing SDN technologies.

Time to Reconsider the Data Center

January 05, 2012 10:00 AM
As enterprises push out data centers into cloud-based computing and virtual applications, traditional data center planning and practices haven't necessarily kept pace. Is it time to reshape definitions of classic brick-and-mortar data centers into a new computing concept with different performance and total-cost-of-ownership expectations? If nothing else, the business cases now driving data center services are beginning to demand it. "As a global organization, we know that we must not only provide 24/7 IT, but also enterprise-strength IT support on a follow-the-sun basis," said John Heller, CIO of Caterpillar.

All I Want For Christmas Is 10Gbase-T

December 23, 2011 10:20 AM
Dear Santa: The best present you, and the networking industry, could give me is general availability of 10GBase-T across switches and NIC/CNAs. Once I can just order my 10gig network gear with 10Gbase-T, I can stop worrying about how to pay for optical transceivers at $350 to $1,200 a pop, as well as about the never-ending compatibility problems with both optics and twin-ax direct connect cables.

Year In Review: Disk-y Business

December 15, 2011 03:45 PM
The good news is that storage costs continue to drop, with third quarter disk capacity shipments up 30.7% year over year. Meanwhile, vendor revenues have increased only 8.5%, meaning enterprises can buy more storage for less money. The bad news is that information volumes are growing at a minimum rate of 59% annually, so that even with the cost per byte dropping rapidly, falling prices can't keep pace with increasing storage demands.

The Cable Conundrum Continues--Vendors Respond

December 15, 2011 10:57 AM
After my initial adventures with 10 Gigabit Ethernet cabling, as recounted in "The 10 Gigabit Ethernet Cable Conundrum," I realized I needed to research this matter further. I put together a few simple questions about 10 Gigabit Ethernet connection technologies and sent them to some leading vendors to see what challenges a system administrator building a multivendor network would face in the real world.

Dell Compellent: Third-Quarter Report Card

December 12, 2011 09:47 AM
In February, Dell acquired Compellent Technologies, a pioneer in virtualized storage. Are Dell customers better off? And are Dell shareholders getting their money's worth? Here are my third-quarter grades for the acquisition.

Emerging DCIM Software Market To Grow 500% By 2015

December 09, 2011 08:26 AM
The precise definition of data center infrastructure management appears to be in the eye of the beholder, but whatever DCIM is, it is growing rapidly, states 451 Research. In its inaugural DCIM software market-sizing report, 451 Research finds that 2010 revenues of $245 million will see a 39% compound annual growth rate through 2015 to $1.3 billion, says Andy Lawrence, research director, eco-efficient IT and datacenter technologies.

Terremark Taking Over Management Of Verizon Data Centers

December 08, 2011 08:50 AM
Ten months after it was acquired by Verizon for $1.4 billion, cloud services provider Terremark is performing an assessment of Verizon data centers globally that will now be managed by the Terremark business unit while also increasing its own data center capacity.

The 10 Gigabit Ethernet Cable Conundrum

December 01, 2011 10:59 AM
As we enter the 10 Gigabit Ethernet era in the data center, we're facing some difficulties regarding cables and optics. While I'm happy all the vendors have settled on SFP+, eliminating the nightmare of figuring out if a given device uses XFP, Xenpack or X2 optics to make 10 Gigabit Ethernet affordable, we're going to have to use copper cables for the 10-Mbps or shorter connections within the data center. I just wish that was as easy as grabbing a cable that meets industry standard specs and plugging it in.

DOD's Data Center Budget Challenge

November 30, 2011 01:46 PM
The Department of Defense surpassed its data center consolidation targets in fiscal 2011 and continues a push for more data center closures. Budget concerns, however, are a "major risk factor" for the initiative's future success, the military says in a new report outlining its plans.

Can Dell Do For Networking What It Did For Storage?

November 18, 2011 11:23 AM
Dell is focused and while it isn't considered by many to be a solutions provider--many consider Dell to be a box pusher--it plans on changing perception. As Fritz Nelson points out in discussing Dell's earnings, the company did a remarkable job of acquiring storage companies that fit with its overall vision, investing in the product lines, doubling or tripling the head count in some cases, and setting off on an integration path that continues today. However, Dell has a difficult road ahead if it wants to get beyond supplying servers to the data center.
