Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

HP Contends For IT Heavyweight Crown

June 06, 2011 01:06 PM
While HP has led the IT market for some time on a revenue basis, its latest announcements continue the company's evolution from its commodity PC, server and printer roots to the enterprise roost that has been ruled by IBM since the dawn of the information age. HP is announcing a number of Converged Infrastructure solutions that bundle hardware, software and services, targeted at what the company calls the Instant-On Enterprise. Having kicked sand in Cisco's face with its network announcements last month, HP is now focusing its sights on combating IT sprawl with turnkey solutions that "deliver new levels of speed, simplicity and efficiency that enable clients to capitalize and anticipate change."

Building A Sustainable Cloud (And More Predictions)

May 13, 2011 02:20 PM
I thought that the cloud was supposed to be about the aggregation of thousands of low-cost servers and disk drives, integrated together with a web services layer and a robust object store, all accessed as a pay-as-you-go service. Wasn't that how cloud service providers were supposed to make money--by using commodity components with their own "secret sauce" software on top? High-cost legacy infrastructure products are not congruent with building a long-term sustainable cloud.

Interop's Best Of The Best, Network Concerns

May 13, 2011 11:00 AM
Interop, the IT industry's biggest networking event, closed out its 25th annual outing by selecting the best of the best of products to allocate, secure, manage and improve the performance of the increasingly extended IT environment. A total of 135 entries qualified for the Best of Interop, an event produced by UBM TechWeb, the publisher of Network Computing. Additionally, according to two surveys at Interop, there are major concerns about cloud management and the flood of consumer devices invading the corporate network.

HP Offers New Networking Hardware To Target Cisco Competition

May 10, 2011 08:00 AM
HP is introducing several new networking switches, wireless access points and other products on Monday in a direct challenge to market leader Cisco Systems. In launching the new products, HP shared benchmarking results that showed significant improvements in capacity, performance, energy efficiency and latency over comparable Cisco switches and access points. The new products are being unveiled at Interop IT Conference and Expo 2011 in Las Vegas.

Dell Stretches Its Networking Reach

May 09, 2011 01:35 PM
While better known for its PCs and servers, Dell has been morphing into more of a full-line IT vendor with storage, appliances and software capabilities. So it should come as no surprise that the company is flexing its networking muscles at this week's Interop. The latest additions to its PowerConnect lineup include the M8024-k Ethernet switch, W-Series wireless solutions and B-Series switch solutions.

Cisco Enters Crowded Market For Portable Data Centers

May 03, 2011 08:14 AM
Cisco Systems introduced the Cisco Containerized Data Center Monday, entering a growing market for pre-built data centers that can be delivered to a customer's location, plugged in and powered up for a quick expansion of compute capacity. Portable data centers, which are also offered by such companies as HP, IBM, Rackspace and Sun Microsystems (now part of Oracle), are designed to be more cost-effective to own and operate compared to building a brick-and-mortar facility.

Data Center Diversity Drives IT Agendas

May 02, 2011 12:57 PM
For the final chapter in Network Computing's five-part examination of Cisco's role in-- and the implications for--changes transforming the data center, we take a closer look at these changes and what they may mean for the near future. The first key to understanding this brave new world is the private cloud and IT as a service, says analyst David Hill, principal, Mesabi Group.

Force 10 Lays Out Standards-Based Next Generation Networking Vision

April 27, 2011 08:00 AM
Force 10 is the latest networking vendor to announce a comprehensive vision for data center networking. Dubbed Open Cloud Networking, the idea is to use standard protocols to interconnect networking gear paired with their Open Automation capabilities, and offer integration and interoperation with network management and systems orchestration management servers. The company's announcement includes additional automation features and new hardware to support the vision. Force 10 is not the first to the table, nor is its vision as grand as Cisco's or Juniper's, but the focus on standards support should resonate with companies that rely on multiple vendors.

Data Centers: Who's On First?

April 26, 2011 03:10 PM
For the fourth installment in NETWORK COMPUTING's five-part examination of the changes transforming the data center, we start with the shot heard around the IT world, when in March 2009, network powerhouse Cisco announced that it was taking on its server/data center rivals--HP, IBM and Sun (now Oracle)--with its Unified Computing System strategy, a.k.a. Project California. In a video supporting the March 16 announcement, John Chambers said, "It isn't just a new technology, it's an approach to virtualization and to the data center that is very unique in the industry."

Lots of Changes, But Top Storage Vendor Lineup To Remain Intact

April 13, 2011 09:03 AM
Having taken a closer look at networking and servers, NETWORK COMPUTING's four-part series on the changes transforming the data center now focuses on storage. With most data centers doubling storage capacity every two to three years, while budgets are only increasing in single digits, doing more with less is essential. Couple this data explosion with the changes sweeping the data center, and the major data center vendors--HP, IBM, Oracle, Dell and Cisco--have been kept very busy.
