IBM & Friends Tackle Future Of Cloud Storage

IBM has announced plans to develop a smart cloud storage architecture over the next three years. The EU-funded joint research initiative, estimated at $21.5M, involves 15 European partners. Called VISION Cloud -- Virtualized Storage Services for the Future Internet - the group plans to develop a new approach, where data is represented by smart objects that include rich information describing the content of the data and how the object should be handled, replicated, or backed up.

The consulting offerings address issues such as application transformation, information optimization, security and hybrid delivery of IT in private clouds, public clouds or on-premise systems. IBM Offers Cloud Security Planning And Assessment Services

IBM is augmenting its cloud security offerings with three new professional services to help enterprises plan for and implement appropriate security policies, processes and controls in migrating to the cloud. These include Security Strategy Roadmap for organizations planning to purchase or provide cloud services, Security Assessment for existing and/or planned cloud initiatives, and Application Security Services to determine appropriate controls to secure business applications and the sensitive data they access in a cloud environment. In addition to the professional services, IBM is enhancing two of its hosted security services, Security Event and Log Management (SELM) and Vulnerability Management.

DynamicOps Introduces Private/Public Cloud Management Platform

DynamicOps, a maker of software for managing virtualized IT environments, introduced the DynamicOps Cloud Automation Center (DCAC) for setting up and managing on-demand IT services for either a private or public cloud infrastructure. DynamicOps software works in heterogeneous environments. The company signed an OEM deal with Dell in September in which DynamicOps software will be sold as part of Dell's Virtual Integrated System architecture.

RelayWare Opens PRM Platform To Third Party Vendors To Offer Synergistic Applications

RelayWare, a global provider of cloud-based partner relationship management (PRM) software, today announced it has opened its platform to offer RelayWare Integrated Application Suite to enable third party vendors to deliver synergistic applications to RelayWare customers. RGlobe, a leader in private collaborative selling networks, debuts as the first third party application available and provides an important sales component for vendors using RelayWare to manage its indirect sales channel. Customers utilizing the RGlobe application are now able to efficiently share information and collaborate on opportunities within a private and secure network.

Egnyte Hybrid Storage Bridges Local And Cloud Storage

Egnyte Inc. has integrated their Hybrid Storage cloud file server service with Google Docs. Users can edit Google Docs documents online from within the Egnyte Cloud File Server and external partners will have access to documents using Google Docs. In addition, Egnyte's users can edit the documents from within the cloud rather than having to download the document, make changes to it and then upload it. Egnyte also integrated its Cloud File Server with File Transfer Protocol, which the company says is still the most robust way to transfer large files.

Ctera Expands, Enhances Cloud Storage Capabilities

Cloud storage specialist Ctera Networks is targeting larger customers with a new data protection appliance and enhancements to its software and portal. The C400 is a 4-bay RAID-5/6 cloud attached storage appliance intended for 50-200 users, with a firmware version 2.5 that includes an agent for bare-metal back up and restore, as well as an agent for Exchange, SQL and Active Directory. The Ctera Portal will now address high availability and load balancing requirements.

Oracle Launches New Processor, Data Warehouse And Solaris 11

New product introductions, including a new version of the Solaris operating system, dominated the first full day of the Oracle Open World conference Monday in San Francisco. In addition to introducing a new SPARC processor and an upgrade of the Sun/Oracle Exadata data warehousing appliance, the day also included the first public appearance by former HP CEO Mark Hurd in his new job as co-president of Oracle.
