SSDs Making The Meek Powerful
February 10, 2010 08:00 AM
Often when we discuss Solid State Disk (SSD) there is a tendency to focus on the very high-end systems with demanding databases or thousands of simultaneous users. However, one of the benefits of SSD is the ability to enable mid-tier systems to deliver performance that matches that of high-end systems with hundreds of mechanical drives. The mid-tier is often overlooked and that could be a mistake. One of the powerful capabilities of SSD is that it can improve performance of just about any system that is strapped for I/O performance. For example a system with SATA based hard drives and mid-tier storage processors with the addition of just a little bit of SSD can suddenly perform as well as systems costing twice as much.Backup Exec And NetBackup Bring Deduplication Without The Hardware

Symantec has announced the release of Backup Exec 2010 and Netbackup 7. Both products now play into Symantec's "Dedupe Everywhere" strategy, with a software-based deduplication option available at even the backup client. The latest versions of the two products reflect the changing landscape of the data center in mid-sized and large enterprises.SAN Cloud Storage

As we discussed in my last entry, the use of cloud storage for primary data has become more practical, especially for NAS-based use. It is going to require more work but there are some pocket use cases already. What about the other extreme: using cloud storage for SAN based data? The first challenge is probably why would you want to do that, anyway?Time - The First Casualty Of Lack Of Storage Analytics

In IT, time is no longer on your side. Staffs are stretched too thin, new products and capabilities are coming at you too fast and requests for additional storage performance or capacity never stop. The problem is that there is a limited amount of time available to you to examine what is causing a performance bottleneck or how much capacity an application really needs. The current trends of virtualization, tiered storage and infrastructure consolidation make diagnoses even more challenging.i365, A Seagate Company, Executes On Cloud-Connected Storage Solutions Vision With EVault Cloud-Connected Services Platform

An entry I wrote a couple weeks ago, "The Perfect Presentation", sparked a lot of interest. One of the points of debate was my comment about listing the price on the opening slide of a presentation. The outcry of course came from companies where their price needs to be "justified." Let me explain why price needs to be there no matter how much the solution costs. Will They Make It? I heard this question twice yesterday, once from a CIO and once from a financial analyst: "Why won't they just tell me what their product does?" It's not the first time I have heard that plea, and I'm sure it won't be the last. One of the ways to tell if a company will make it is how quickly can they get you to understand why they exist and what makes them different.Veeam Software Helps Drive Adoption Of VMware ESXi

Backup and replication technologies merged again on Monday when EMC updated its backup monitoring and analysis tool, Data Protection Advisor (DPA). Acquired in 2008 with the WysDM acquisition, Data Protection Advisor (then known as Backup Advisor) was focused on monitoring backup processes. However, EMC has continued to expand Advisor's capabilities, adding NAS device support (SAN was already provided), virtual tape libraries (VTL), tape, deduplication and now in version 5.5, enhanced virtualization and support for EMC replication technologies.Data Protection Workflow

I was speaking with Bocada and Tek-Tools last week about their focus on helping customers solve their data protection challenges. If you think about it there is no shortage of solutions to protect your environment, and I am encountering more than a few data centers that have the same data set protected four or five times. Ironically, they don't feel anymore comfortable about recovery. The problem is a lack of process or workflow to all these point solutions.« Previous Page | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | Next Page »
