4G? No, It’s More Like 4Gee!
March 26, 2012 09:00 AM
Have you actually held a 4G device in your hands while it does a speed test? Has your brain struggled to reconcile the numbers displayed at the end of the test with the fact that you’re connected to a mobile network and not Wi-Fi? Have you felt your reality get pleasantly rocked in a way that left you a bit confounded over the numbers that your device was showing you? This 4G stuff is simply amazing.Ruckus Seeks To Re-Invent Muni-Wireless
March 19, 2012 09:00 AM
Around 2005, several US cities tried to make a go of metropolitan wireless networking. Many of the initiatives were costly failures, and just as many morphed into shadows of their intended scales and uses. But in IT, sometimes old ideas come back with new teeth. It will be interesting to see how this one pans out, and for multiple reasons.Shared Data Plans Will Have Significant Impact

May 23, 2011 07:13 AM
It's always a trip to pull into a small-town diner, walk in the door and see the sign. It might be printed in simple font or, better yet, hand-scrawled. Whether it says "We Have Wi-Fi," "Wi-Fi Here" or whatever, our expectation that wireless will simply be anywhere we land is more frequently being realized. Free wireless is always best from the user perspective, but it's completely reasonable for a business owner to try to make a buck, or at least cover his or her costs, on the signal provided for customers. Now, PowerCloud Systems puts a new twist on the Wi-Fi hotspot notion, putting business-quality hotspot options at the ready for anyone wanting to serve up that wireless goodness we all crave.Fluke Tightens AirMagnet WLAN Protection

With almost 10,000 customers, including three-quarters of the Fortune 100, Fluke Networks' AirMagnet is releasing the latest version (9.0) of AirMagnet Enterprise, its wireless intrusion prevention system (WIPS) for managing and securing enterprise WLANs. Wireless communications is exploding, and security is a huge and growing problem. The company says that by the end of the year, 70 percent of all new worldwide voice and data client-to-LAN connections will be wireless, with 802.11n becoming the de facto standard (with 50 percent of unit shipment in 2011, 63 percent in 2012 and 75 percent by 2014, according to Infonetics).AirMagnet Enterprise 9.0 Takes WLAN Security Up A Notch
January 31, 2011 07:05 PM
The tidal wave of mobile devices washing over the enterprise these days is on everybody's mind. We all have our own frames of reference and reasons to care about the running invasion of portable devices and the insatiable demand for networks in the air, and AirMagnet comes at it from the security angle with its new Enterprise 9.0. Wireless environments are dynamic enough to keep us on our toes when things are healthy and everyone is behaving themselves, but human nature is never far away, and so wireless security has to be kept conversationally front and center. The stakes are high in many market spaces that have wireless networks, and AirMagnet Enterprise 9.0 promises new capabilities and improved responsiveness for wireless customers that simply cannot afford to go unarmed.Ford Adds Security Features To In-Car Wi-Fi Technology

Ford Motor Co. is rolling out the second generation of its Sync mobile connectivity platform this fall with new features and enhanced security. Sync 2.0, as part of a larger offering of connectivity features called MyFordTouch, lets drivers access Wi-Fi hot spots to download RSS feeds and podcasts from the Internet to play in the car's stereo system. The transmission has to be in "Park" before the Internet connection works to prevent people surfing the Web while driving. Besides the connectivity of external devices, the MyFordTouch system offers such features as GPS navigation and interior climate control on an 8-inch touch screen.Brocade And Motorola Partner; Brocade To Dump Meru Networks
